Court Interpreting, 35– ECTS

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the study module, the student will have a thorough understanding of the individual stages involved in court interpreting and the situations it takes place in. The student will comprehend both the professional and ethical principles involved and the legislation affects their work. The student will be able to assess the appropriateness of interpreting methods and techniques relevant to interpreting tasks and situations and will be able to apply this knowledge in practice.

The student will understand the essential environment of court interpretation; they will be familiar with the functioning of Finnish institutions and the fundamentals of the judicial system, as well as with the common processes of the courts and the police. The student will also be able to compare them with the corresponding institutions in countries where their B working language is spoken. They will also have a command of the key terms, expressions, and specialised language of court interpreting in both of their working languages.

The student will be able to familiarise themselves with the subject, documents, and specialised vocabulary required in each interpretation assignment. The student will understand even complex legal texts and will be able to utilise them in their work as a court interpreter.

The student will have internalised the ethical principles of interpretation work and will have a good command of the professional role of a court interpreter. The student will also understand the legal regulations concerning confidentiality and conflicts of interest involved in their work as a court interpreter.
