Level: advanced and doctoral studies.
The lecturers are visiting experts. The topics vary yearly. Each lecturer typically gives a series of lectures (6-10 lectures) as a two-day intensive course.
To pass the course for 1 credit point (ECTS point), a student must
- attend two instances of the lecture series (about 20 hours in total), and
- write a brief (about one page) summary of each instance attended.
Lectures are scheduled on case-by-case basis. For information on upcoming lectures, see the course homepage.
This one week orientation course is offered jointly for all international students (degree and exchange) at the beginning of the Autumn and Spring semesters. It is most important for you to take part in it.
On the first day of the Orientation, a session on how to fill in the registration papers is offered. During the week you will get information on studies and study practices as well as library, computer and other systems and services at the University of Tampere. You will also learn about Finnish customs and the history of the City of Tampere. A bus tour around the city is also included.

The Orientation Week programme will be published in the summer 2013.
Note, this course overlaps with two prior courses: VTEKS115 Introduction to Information Visualization (Johdatus tiedon visualisointiin) and the original Information Visualization (Tiedon visualisointi), and cannot be taken by the students who have taken either of the earlier courses.

About prerequisites: student should have understanding of basic concepts and methods of usability and human centered design before entering the course. The course gives an overview of the fields of human-technology interaction and interaction design. It cannot be taken by students who have done the courses VTEKP2 Introduction to Interactive Technology (Johdatus vuorovaikutteiseen teknologiaan) and VTEKA15 Introduction to User Interfaces (Käyttöliittymien perusteet).
This course will be in Moodle. The recommended time for taking this course is in Period I at the beginning of studies. Also available on period III.
Kurssin kotisivulla
Ohjelmoinnin tekniikka koostuu kahdesta erillisestä 5 op laajuisesta kurssista, joista ensimmäisessä opetellaan C- ja jälkimmäisessä C++-ohjelmointikieltä. Kurssit on mahdollista suorittaa toisistaan riippumattomasti, mutta suositeltavin tapa on suorittaa C- ja C++-kurssit peräkkäin.
Kurssit ovat luonteeltaan ohjelmointaitoa syventäviä ja siten todennäköisesti vaativampia kuin ohjelmoinnin peruskurssit TIEP1 Lausekielinen ohjelmointi (aikaisemmin TKOPP1) tai TIEA2 Olio-ohjelmoinnin perusteet (aikaisemmin TKOPA14).

This practical two-day orientation is offered for international students studying in the Master's Degree Programmes offered through the medium of English. The orientation offers a general overview to academic and study-related practices as well as to livelihood and social security of a degree student in Finland.

Selection criteria: Priority is given to degree students. Otherwise the selection criterion is the date of registration. Selections on view: The final course lists will be posted on the Language Centre's notice board on 30 August.
Exceptions:
This module (54 hours) is two periods long and is online apart from individual teacher-student tutorials for discussion of the submitted thesis extract. The work consists of readings, group analysis tasks and thesis writing work. Students should take the module after their research proposal has been accepted by their programme and they are about to embark upon the writing of their thesis.
You can get 1, 3 or 5 ECTS by taking the course:
- 1 ECTS: you need to attend at least 10 lectures (remember to mark your name on the list during the lecture).
- 3 ECTS: you need to attend at least 10 lectures and pass the lecture-based exam.
- 5 ECTS: you need to attend at least 10 lectures and pass the lecture-based exam, and pass the exam based on additional readings (literature for the exam will be confirmed later during the course)

This module is made up of class sessions including group work (20 hours), as well as independent out of class tasks (61 hours). The module will be two periods long and will take place in the autumn semester of the first year of the master’s degree programme.
