Modes of study: Observation, written tasks, report
Observation: Exchange student will observe Finnish school classes according to a schedule in all of 20 hours on three grades. 10 hours should be in primary and 10 hours in secondary and in upper secondary school.
Written tasks: Student writes a learning diary on every observation session. The arising questions will be discussed with the teacher in charge of the observed lesson in a separate two one hour-meetings.
Report: In the end students will compose a scientific report (10 pages) on the ground of the learning diaries and literature. The report should include also a personal contribution and cross-cultural comparison between the schools in Finland and in one’s own country.
Instructions for the learning diary:
Learning diary is a short written text (1-2 pages of each observation session, for example) introducing the main arguments and other important points of the lecture. The written text is processed through student’s own remarks and interpretations. Therefore the learning diary reflects student’s individual thinking of the observed learning situation, and thus is the result of a "dialogue" between student’s pre-knowledge and new information. Student should tell how his/her existing knowledge has changed due to the observed teaching session.
Instructions for the essay (based on the learning diary)
Essay on observation of Finnish School System should be 10-15 pages long text written in a free form. In the essay the student tells about his/her experiences during the observation. It is expected that the essay contains a description of the observed school and Finnish schooling system (with references, such as books, articles and other information available e.g. Internet) and that the student reflects what he/she has learnt during the time of the observation.
It is also expected that the essay includes issues, such as 1) how schools in Finland differ from the schools in student’s home country? 2) What good/poor experiences the observation has offered to the student? 3) What countries can learn from each other with respect to school systems?

Opintojakso on mahdollista suorittaa itsenäisenä lukupiirityöskentelynä. Lukupiirien aloituskokoontumisen yhteydessä kerrotaan tarkemmat suoritusohjeet ja jakaudutaan lukupiiriryhmiin.

1) This module consists of optional studies related to education, internationality and multiculturalism awarded by the exchange university. To transfer credits, please contact the person in charge in study administration. (available only for the degree students of the School of Education)
2) Student can also get 3 ECTS by writing a written report/essay of a student exchange where he/she discusses, comments and critically reflects the contents of given topics. Upon completion of the course students gain practical experiences of working in multicultural and international environments.
The number of ECTS credits is dependent on the extent of the international experience.

The course introduces students to the basic concepts of identity, human lifecourse and developmental processes from educational, psychological and sociological points of view.
The course contains an introduction lecture after which students will study the topic independently in reading groups. Instructions for reading groups will be given at the lecture.

The objective of the course is that the student
- understands the growing significance of comparative research in the development of educational theories and education policy-making
- learns to analyse educational phenomena in an international perspective.

Content: The course focuses on innovation studies and puts emphasis on knowledge and skills in economic development and innovations. During the course the various aspects of education in the society will be studied as well as the different modes of knowledge intensive functions in today's economies and innovation systems will be analysed.

Content: The course focuses on institutional and developmental perspectives on how early childhood education and basic education are organized in the Finnish educational system. During the course, students get familiar with the Finnish education system and EDU’s current research on the topic, which is presented by various researchers and lecturers.

Content: The course focuses on social and cultural perspectives on school improvement and learning community, with a special focus on the youth in line with lifelong learning. During the course, the various aspects of education, training and learning will be studied through the linking of human creativity, knowledge and innovation and the challenges to bridge the learning in and out of the school environment.
The first and second sections of the course introduce the major concepts underlying the school improvement and learning community. The third and fourth sections of this course focus on student activities which will be to build case studies based on the web-based research and on-site visits. Students will work individually and in groups to build web-based and on-site case studies that show their social and cultural perspectives on school improvement and learning community. The workshop periods will be used to work within the class to guide this activity. The instructor will help the students structure their activities and build and reflect these web-based case studies and on-site visits. The case studies will then be presented for the entire class to learn from in the last section of the lesson.

Multicultural Education and Training -course as part of Multicultural Study Programme in Education: The objective of the course is to give a general idea of how education can be used to promote the development of genuine multi-cultural and pluralistic society.
The course analyses the foundations, aims and central concepts of multicultural education and the challenges in working life and school context entailed by growing internationalism and cultural diversity.

Content: The course focuses on educational studies with transnational perspectives exploring interconnections between education, international migration, and transnational ties of migrants. During the course, the students will examine previous studies concerning transnational learning, transnational educational spaces, and cross-border learning environments.
