Course is available only for the students in Media Education and Media Management programmes.

Students select a target, context and pedagogic means to their project after discussion with the person in charge of the study module. It is possible to implement the research-based project in media, school, youth work etc. in a media educational context. Media educational internship is one possible mode of the project. An internship can be included to this module.

This autumn students in Media Education programme have a possibility to complete part of the project studies ( 5 ECTS) by participating in the SOMEJAM weekend:

SOMEJAM2016 Tampere www.somejam.fi

SOMEJAM2016 Tampere is an intensive weekend event 21st – 23rd October 2016 working together with young people, youth workers and with students of various fields of study. The language of the event is English.

The course offers a media educational perspective to the participants in a real youth work at the City of Tampere. The completion of the course requires participation for the whole weekend and a report as an assignment.

How does it work?

Somejam kicks off on Friday at 4 pm and the multi-talent teams have 48 hours to create new concepts in the form of apps, games or web services for youths with the help of team mentors who are top specialists in new technology. On Sunday the jury of technology specialists will announce the winner. The winning team can have the opportunity to pitch their idea to New Factory Demola.

Organizing partners: University of Tampere, Verke - the National Center for Digital Youth Work in Finland, Tampere City Youth Service, University of Tampere and Tampere University of Applied Sciences TAMK

Only for the master's students in Media Education programme.

Students learn about how people are using media goods and services today, and how that is both the same and different in the historic
context. Lectures also highlight changing perceptions of media, emphasising what that implies for meeting expectations and accommodating variation in preferences. Coursework encourages developing more nuanced understandings in a comparative framework that offers contrasts between legacy media and new media, audiences and users in key segments (e.g. younger versus older, men versus women), and in different countries (i.e. international comparison).

This course introduces students to the testing of causal hypotheses with statistical methods, focusing on social-science applications.  Causal inference in this setting requires melding the language of mathematical statistics with the reality of human decision-making.  Successfully testing a social-science hypothesis thus requires both facility with the mathematics, as well an understanding of how people actually behave.  This course gives students an introduction to the math, and experience in translating the math to reality.

The course is timed according to the scripted schedule of the masters’ program in Public Choice, and is tailored to the needs of that program.  As a result, non-PCP students should be aware that the course will proceed at a substantially faster pace than other courses.

The first week is the program’s Math Camp, consisting of 10 lecture hours (no quarters) and nightly group homework assignments.  The following three weeks form the Statistics component, consisting of 24 lecture hours (no quarters), twice-a-week group homework assignments, and a final exam.  The final mark comes from the Statistics component alone: 50% weight on homework, and 50% on the exam.
