The course contains an introduction lecture after which students will study the topic independently in reading groups. Instructions for reading groups will be given at the lecture.

Content:
The course focuses on designing, implementing and evaluating the actions and strategies of “lifelong learning city” and acquiring understanding in how to develop inter-departmental and interdisciplinary cooperation. During the course, the various aspects of education, training and learning will be studied through the linking of human creativity, knowledge and innovation beyond bridging the learning in and out of the school environment.

The first and second sections of the course introduce the major concepts underlying the school improvement and learning community. The third and fourth sections of this course focus on student activities which will be to build case studies based on the web-based research and on-site visits. Students will work individually and in groups to build web-based and on-site case studies that show their societal and cultural perspectives on school improvement and learning community. The workshop periods will be used to work within the class to guide this activity. The instructor will help the students structure their activities and build and reflect these web-based case studies and on-site visits. The case studies will then be presented for the entire class to learn from the last section of the lesson.

Modes of Study: lecture and seminar, short essay

Short essay: max. 5 pages, font 12 points, including references based on the subthemes of the course. The student group chooses the topic freely.

Content: This course focuses on what we might mean by diverse, democratic and ecologically sustainable communities in the context of a globalizing world.  Students will examine the deeply embedded cultural roots of modern industrial societies currently causing great social and ecological harms.  And they will analyze those social, cultural and economic values and practices in their own communities that could be revitalized and revalued to help strengthen solutions to these problems.  We will explore together “pedagogies of responsibility” as we examine what educators’ role ought to be in this process

The course focuses on institutional and developmental perspectives of Finnish early education and school system as part of the overall educational system and society. During the course, various researchers present their topical studies and results around the theme, and lead the students to discussions. Students will reflect their learning based on presentations, discussions and selected articles in a learning diary. The course can be conducted as an individual course, or jointly with KASMULTI2B / KASMULTI2C courses dealing with the practical observation to gain a maximum learning potential.

Content: The course focuses on underlying cultural, societal and economic factors behind practices of quality enhancement in education, training, and learning. During the course, we will scrutinize similar/or different changes in education and training, teaching and learning model, qualifications framework, competence(y)-based education policy and practice, by highlighting key actors related as well as important factors to affect the relations.
