The Department of Literature and the Arts offers training in literary history, textual theory, narrative poetics, and theatre and drama studies. This small but effectual department comprises three subjects: Finnish Literature, Comparative Literature, Theatre and Drama Research. The staff includes three full professors, three senior assistant professors, one junior assistant professor, a director (in Theatre and Drama Research), a departmental coordinator, and a departmental secretary. In addition, the department has a number of part-time teachers: visiting professors (docents) and teaching assistants. Research is pursued in all major subjects, and the department encourages postgraduate studies.

Until now, lectures and other instruction have been given mostly in Finnish, but tutoring in Swedish, English and German is available. Course books are in Finnish, English, Swedish and German.
