On this programme the Bachelor's degree will be taken on a broad-based Bachelor's programme including subject-related courses required of all students. Master's studies are based on the subject-related courses taken for the Bachelor's degree and on their success in these. Students completing the degree will be capable of seeking, processing, producing and conveying information on society and of assessing its relevance. Graduates will find careers options as experts in research, development, managerial, teaching and communication tasks. The degree programme covers basic and applied social sciences which are among the major strengths of the University of Tampere: - Social policy is concerned with the research of society and the production of welfare in a changing world. Students will learn about the practices of social policy, issues of social risks and inequality, the structures of society and everyday perspectives. - Social psychology focuses on the relation between the individual and society. Students will learn about social interaction, the significance of individuals as a constructors of meanings, about groups and communities and the tensions between them. - In gender studies students learn about how gender and sexuality structure societal differences, everyday life, interaction and the creation of knowledge. - In social anthropology the interest lies in the cultural dimensions of society and the cultural diversity of the world. Students will specialize in cultural encounters and themes of transnational social processes.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of Bachelor's studies, students will have acquired a broad basic conception of theories in social sciences, the main concepts, research methods and principles. Students will be capable of using and critically evaluating such knowledge and expertise. They will go deeper into the basic substance of one or two subjects included in the degree programme while forming a conception of the extent and boundaries of social science. They will be able to apply the knowledge acquired and find creative solutions to complex and unanticipated problems. They will be able to work independently and in collaboration with others in societal work tasks and be capable of oral and written communication. Students will be eligible to embark on Master's studies in social policy, social psychology, sociology, gender studies, social anthropology or youth work and youth studies.
On completion of their Master's studies, students will have a command of the concepts, methods and substance of social psychology, social policy, sociology, gender studies, social anthropology or youth work and youth studies entailing skills in independent thinking and knowledge of the relevant research base.
They will be conversant with the ways in which their discipline habitually critically contemplates society and pursues, analyses and generates new knowledge.
On the basis of skills acquired during Master's studies, they will be able to exert influence in societal issues and to participate independently and with others in research and development, creating new knowledge.
They will be able to independently direct themselves, issues and others in demanding societal expert tasks, and to contemplate societal phenomena from the perspective of creating new knowledge and new solutions.
They will have a wide range of interaction skills and be versed in oral and written communication. They will develop their own expertise independently.
Students will possess the basic capability for doctoral studies in social policy, social psychology, sociology, gender studies or social anthropology.
