Pedagogical management

Management of education refers to the organisation and allocation of all operations and resources related to education. However, management of education also requires leadership. It covers the entity of structures, regulations and procedures, the management and decision-making processes of education, roles and responsibilities, and pedagogical management.

Pedagogical management refers to the management of teaching and learning, and its key areas include curriculum work, teaching staff’s competence and its development, teaching and learning resources, as well as support and promotion of students’ learning.

Management of education supports the execution of the educational duties of higher education institutes (HEIs), ensures the quality and purpose of operations and, for its part, facilitates the goal-oriented development of operations in HEI’s communities. The key objectives of education management are high-quality education and learning and creating a learning environment that promotes learning. On one hand, education is managed and developed within the framework of assignment-specific responsibilities and bodies, but, on the other hand, through collaboration between colleagues and with students.

The teacher participates in managing education by taking responsibility for the development of the content and pedagogics of their teaching, the studies they are in charge of and their own competence. The teacher takes part in the curriculum work as well as the evaluation and development of operations in accordance with the practices of curriculum work and the feedback system and while acting as a member of a competent body or a work group. Teaching development work embedded in the education management offers teachers plenty of opportunities to participate and develop education in collaboration with their colleagues. High-quality management of education stems from the accountability and cooperation of everyone involved in teaching. Committed teachers developing continuously their work deserve committed actors in the management of education to support their work.

Tampere University

At the university, operators on many different levels and in many different roles participate in the management of education.

Parties responsible for the management of education operate at all levels of the university, its faculties or other educational departments, degree programmes and study fields. Furthermore, the representatives of student organisations take part in the working group’s operations and preparation work at all levels. Additionally, various service units of the university, including information management, Ilibrary and ICT, are deeply engaged in supporting efficient operations.

TAMK

At Tampere University of Applied Sciences, the actors in TAMK competence units in charge of the degree programmes and other education also participate in the management of education. The key operational methods are TAMK’s shared executive teams and cross-department teams that support the management of education at the level of the entire TAMK organisation, strategizing and developing degree education. The Higher Education Council makes decisions and formulates guidelines concerning the key aspects of education. Students take part in the work of the teams and groups through the competence units and the different TAMK teams. Committees and other forms of stakeholder cooperation play a central role in anticipating the evolving needs and required skills for working life for working life as well as developing the quality of education.
