Students for courses are primarily selected in accordance with the order of precedence described in the Regulations on Degrees. The regulations give priority to students for whom the course in question is compulsory. Depending on the course, more specific rules may be applied at the level of the faculty, degree programme or the individual course. 

Students are not admitted to courses in order of enrolment. A very common basis for the order of precedence is the number of credits accumulated. This can be the total number, the number of credits in the degree programme or the number of credits in the specialisation option. Students in a specific phase of their studies can also be given priority in course admission. In addition to this, courses may require students to complete compulsory preceding studies in order to be admitted. These studies are specified in the curriculum guide or teaching schedule.

Students are generally selected to groups on the basis of completed study units in education, but some groups also give priority according to the students’ specialisms. Before enrolling, make sure that all the study units you have completed are listed in your transcript of records! Register matters are handled by the study services office in room 244 on the 2nd floor of the Virta Building.

Before the first group session, the teacher may contact the participants by email to clarify their expectations or, for example, request confirmation of attendance. For this reason, you should follow your tuni.fi email before the start of courses. 
 
If you do not accept the group placement given to you, it is important that you cancel your participation as soon as possible before the start of the course to the teacher in question and to Pirjo Leppälä in the study services office, pirjo.leppala [at] tuni.fi (pirjo[dot]leppala[at]tuni[dot]fi).

When you cancel your place in time, a student who is in a reserve place will have time to hear about the vacancy before the course  begins, so that all the groups can begin fully from the first session. 
Inform the teacher about your absence eg when you fall ill.

The first meeting is often the most important session of the whole study unit because you agree on schedules, assignments, modes of study etc. If you have received a group placement but are unable to come to the first meeting because of illness, notify the teacher immediately so that you will not lose your place. If you have not notified the teacher about your absence in advance, the teacher will replace you with a student who is on the reserve list and who has come to the first meeting to see whether there are any vacant places. The places of those who are absent will be given to students who have shown up for the first meeting and who are on the reserve list according to their placement in the reserve list. The places will be given to others 15 minutes after the start of the first meeting. 
 
If you are on a reserve list, see if there are any cancellations before the start of a group. As far as possible, study services will notify about free places by email directly to the students who are on the reserve list. You can also go to the first meeting to see if there are any free places left in the group.

In case the number of enrolled students that have completed the prerequisite studies exceeds the maximum of what can be admitted to the course, the priority for participation is determined in the following order:

<ol>
	<li>degree program and/or field of study (whether the course is compulsory)</li>
	<li>completed course credits</li>
	<li>grades</li>
</ol>

Priority may also be given to the students within the faculty if the course in question is a part of the faculty's study module.

For appropriate reasons, the responsible teacher of the course may grant exceptions to the provisions above. In ambiguous instances, the matter is decided by the dean of the faculty.
