Before the licentiate thesis is submitted for examination, it must undergo the official originality check with the Turnitin software. Feed your thesis manuscript into your supervisor’s Turnitin section on the TUNI Moodle. Your supervisor checks the originality report and informs the faculty about the results at the same time that he/she proposes examiners for your thesis.&nbsp;

The faculty appoints two examiners for the thesis who must both hold doctoral degrees. After your supervisor has granted permission, deliver the completed licentiate thesis manuscript and the possible partial publications to the faculty according to the instructions of the doctoral programme/faculty.

The licentiate thesis is saved on the publication database Trepo, which is the institutional repository of Tampere University.

The examiners issue written statements on the licentiate thesis mainly within two months. The faculty decides on approving the thesis and the grade, which can be “approved” or “failed”. Before the faculty’s decision on the grade, you are reserved the opportunity to issue a rejoinder on the examiners’ statements.&nbsp;

Licentiate theses are electronically published on the Trepo database.

When the author and the supervisor consider that the licentiate thesis is ready for examination, the author must submit the following: the manuscript (in PDF format) and the permission to submit the thesis for examination form. The documents and relevant enclosures should be sent to the Faculty so that the examiners can be appointed.

The permission for pre-examination form contains the supervisor’s proposal for examiners. Both examiners must hold doctoral degrees. One of the examiners must come from outside the University and the other examiner can be a supervisor. Delegated by the Faculty Council, the Dean appoints two examiners for a licentiate thesis.

The student and the supervisor must sign the form. The form is available on Tampere University’s electronic <a href="https://content-webapi.tuni.fi/proxy/public/2021-08/final-application-for-a-permission-to-submit-a-licentiate-thesis-for-examination-en_soc_2021_fill.pdf">Student’s guide</a> from “Forms and links at SOC’s Scientific Postgraduate Education.

The required enclosures:

<ol>
	<li>An abstract (1–2 pages) summarising the main findings of the study in both Finnish and English.</li>
	<li>A Turnitin report signed by the supervisor.</li>
	<li>If the licentiate thesis is article-based, the following documents should also be submitted:</li>
</ol>

<ul>
	<li>A list of the articles on which the research is based. If all the articles have not been published in scientific publications yet, a confirmation of their status is required. This confirmation can be a publisher’s message (eg printed e-mail) either confirming acceptance for publication or receipt of a submitted article.</li>
	<li>A report on the student’s own contribution in each article. The report should describe the student’s contribution (as appropriate) to each article in terms of choosing the topic, forming research questions, choosing the research setting and methods (eg drafting a questionnaire), collecting data, conducting analysis, interpreting the results and writing the article. The report (1–2 pages) must be approved and signed by the doctoral student and the responsible supervisor.</li>
	<li>If any of the articles in the licentiate thesis have been or will be used as part of another dissertation, a written consent is required from all other article writers and their supervisors.</li>
</ul>

The originality of licentiate theses submitted for examination is verified by using the Turnitin originality checking software. Doctoral students may use the Turnitin programme already during their research work to ensure that they have correctly referred to literature. When the licentiate thesis is complete and all the references are properly done, the manuscript is fed to the Turnitin programme for the official originality check. Examination of a licentiate thesis

Before submitting a licentiate thesis for examination, the originality of the thesis must be officially verified through the Turnitin system. The supervisor approves the originality check. In conjunction with the submission of the manuscript, the supervisor must provide a signed copy of the report generated by Turnitin to the Faculty’s administration staff.&nbsp;

The student must ensure that he/she holds the copyrights to the images, tables and other materials contained in the thesis or has obtained permission to publish such materials online (for example, the articles of an article-based thesis).&nbsp;

After the supervisor has granted permission, the student delivers the completed licentiate thesis manuscript and possible publications included therein for examination. Please note that the manuscript can longer be revised after it has been submitted for examination through the Trepo system.

The student must be registered as present for the entire duration of the examination process.

Examiners

The Faculty of Education and Culture will request the thesis supervisor to nominate the examiners. . The dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture will appoint at least two examiners for a licentiate thesis based on the supervisor’s proposal after consulting the head of doctoral programme. &nbsp;The examiners must have completed a doctoral degree. At least one examiner must come from outside the Faculty, and the supervisor of the licentiate thesis cannot serve as an examiner. &nbsp;

The author of the thesis will be provided with an opportunity to respond before the selection of the examiners. In terms of the disqualification of examiners, the provisions set forth in Section 28 of the Administrative Procedure Act (434/2003) will apply.&nbsp;

The examiners must prepare a justified written statement on the licentiate thesis, including a grade proposal.

A licentiate thesis can also be examined in a separately arranged examination.

<h2>Examination of a licentiate thesis </h2>

Before submitting your licentiate thesis for examination, you must consult your thesis supervisor to confirm that your thesis is ready to be examined. You must also ensure that you hold copyright to the images, tables and other materials included in your thesis or have received appropriate permission to use them in your thesis (such as the articles included in an article-based thesis).

Your manuscript will be checked for originality with Turnitin. A note confirming that the originality of the manuscript has been verified will be added to your thesis. The Turnitin report signed by your supervisor will be submitted to the student administration services when your thesis is submitted for examination.

You must make sure that all the required study attainments and modules, which are counted towards your licentiate degree, appear in your academic records.

<h2>Examiners of a licentiate thesis</h2>

The supervisor of your licentiate thesis will nominate examiners for your thesis after consulting with you. The proposal will be submitted for consideration to the head of doctoral programme. The dean will formally appoint at least two examiners for your thesis. The examiners will be expected to provide written statements and propose a grade for your thesis. Both examiners must be independent of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and one of them must be independent of Tampere University. The examiners must hold a doctorate. Individuals who have been involved in supervising your licentiate thesis or whose objectivity may be otherwise compromised are not eligible to serve as examiners.&nbsp;

<h2>Examination seminar</h2>

Once the dean has appointed the examiners for your licentiate thesis, the faculty staff will consult with you and the examiners to agree on the date of the examination seminar and on other practical arrangements relating to the examination.

The public examination seminar must be conducted in Finnish, the language in which your thesis is written, or some other language as agreed upon by you and the examiners. &nbsp;

At the examination seminar, you will have the opportunity to orally respond to any comments and observations made on your thesis. Your thesis supervisor will preside over the seminar. The records taken during the seminar will be delivered to the Faculty Council along with the examiners’ statements. You will be given an opportunity to respond to the examiners’ statements. To allow enough time for providing a response, you may request that the matter be postponed to the next meeting of the Faculty Council.

Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (DPMCP, DPII, DPHAT, DPLA)

Before the licentiate thesis is submitted for examination, the work must undergo originality checking in the Turnitin text-matching service. The checking happens so that the author of the thesis feeds the manuscript into the supervisor’s Turnitin area on TUNI Moodle. The supervisor examines the Turnitin report and reports on the findings to the Faculty while he/she proposes the pre-examiners.

The Faculty appoints two examiners for the thesis who must hold a doctoral degree. After the supervisor grants permission, the author of the thesis submits the completed thesis manuscript with the possible sub-publications to the Faculty according to the Faculty’s/doctoral programme’s instructions.

The thesis is saved on Trepo, the open institutional repository of Tampere University, when it is submitted for examination. The examiners are sent the same version of the thesis as has been saved on Trepo.

The examiners issue a written statement on the thesis and a suggestion on the grade mainly within two months. The Faculty Council, or the Dean as delegated by the Faculty Council, decides on the approval and grade of the licentiate thesis, which may be approved or failed.

The author is provided the opportunity to issue a complaint on the examiners’ statements before the thesis is graded by the Faculty Council. Faculty Councils have confirmed the assessment criteria.

After the licentiate thesis has been graded and all the studies in the licentiate degree have been completed, the student may submit the application for the degree certificate in Sisu.
