<p>In addition to the bilateral agreements Tampere University participates in various exchange programmes and networks through which you may seek and exchange period in different parts of the world. Most of the student exchange destinations are listed in the <a href="https://www.service4mobility.com/europe/MobilitySearchServlet?identifier=TAMPERE17&amp;kz_bew_pers=S&amp;kz_bew_art=OUT&amp;sprache=en">Mobility-Online portal</a>, but in some cases the most up-to-date information can be found from the exchange programme's websites (such as ISEP, QSEP and north2north).</p>

<p>Exchange students from Tampere University are always exempted from paying the tuition fees of the host university and are eligible for <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/funding-studies-abroad">financial support</a>. The exchange programmes and networks are listed below, as well as possible additional information regarding available destination universities.</p>


<p>The Erasmus+ programme is an EU programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The programme supports higher education institutions’ European cooperation and mobility. For students, the Erasmus+ programme offers the opportunity to participate in student exchange at a foreign university and to undertake a traineeship in a company or organisation in the participating country. For higher education institutions, the Erasmus+ programme provides the opportunity to collaborate with international partner universities.</p>

<p>You can participate Erasmus+ mobility periods (student exchange and traineeship) totalling up to 12 months maximum per each cycle of study (bachelor/ master/ doctoral).</p>


Erasmus+ (EU and EEA countries, Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey)

<p>The International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) is an international student mobility programme that started in 1979. The programme is based on reciprocity in student exchanges between the member universities and it is coordinated by the ISEP Global Office in the United States. The ISEP network consists hundreds of universities in over 50 countries and Tampere University has been a member of the programme since 1982, which means <strong>over</strong> <strong>40 years of ISEP experience</strong> in student exchanges with the United States!</p>

<h3>The main principles of the ISEP Exchange programme</h3>

<p>In the ISEP Exchange programme, you are required to apply to several universities - in the Tampere University's <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">autumn round</a> you are applying to the ISEP programme and not to an ISEP destination university. In your application you have to include in your motivation letter three ISEP universities and study plans of your preliminary interest and in the final ISEP application you can apply up to ten universities. The ISEP Global Office places the applicant into one of the universities. ISEP exchange is therefore a good fit for applicants who can find suitable courses from several North American universities. Whether a student is selected into a university depends on the number of all applicants worldwide.</p>

<p>Degree students of all study fields (and levels) are eligible to apply for the ISEP student exchange. Currently, you can only apply for an ISEP exchange <strong>only for one semester</strong>. During a one-semester exchange period, it is possible to study all study fields represented by the universities in the programme, with the exception of clinical medicine. Through ISEP, you are eligible to apply <strong>to North America</strong>, but in some (rare) cases also to other countries beside North American universities. However, it is not possible (almost never) to apply to European universities through ISEP because there are plenty of exchange places available in the Erasmus+ programme. You will receive more detailed application instructions after you have been selected to the ISEP programme at Tampere University.</p>

<h3>How to apply to the ISEP programme (step 1) - application round at TAU</h3>

<p>You have to apply first to the ISEP programme during the <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">autumn round</a> of Tampere University, which is also the main application round for ISEP exchanges<strong> </strong>(in the next academic year, either autumn or spring). Sometimes ISEP programme might be available in one of the additional application rounds, but the main application period is the one to aim for. For possible additional application rounds, see <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Application instructions for student exchange</a>.</p>

<p>Applying for ISEP is a two-step process. The first step is the application round that takes place at Tampere University and only those approved in this first step will be eligible to apply to ISEP universities through the ISEP Global Office, which is coordinating the programme.</p>

<p>The first application round happens through Tampere University’s <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">autumn round</a>. Please note, that ISEP can be a <strong>single application destination</strong> (as you can apply to several destinations in the application form). Your <strong>motivation letter addressed to the ISEP programme</strong> must include a preliminary study plan for at least <strong>three different ISEP universities</strong>, including at least two universities from <strong>North America</strong>. Tampere University makes decisions on nomination to the programme in December and all applicants will be notified of the results by email by the end of December. If you are studying in a master's degree programme taught in English at Tampere University, you need to request a letter of support from your programme's <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/services-and-regulations-students/services-and-forms/guidance-and-counselling-services-faculties-contact-information" rel="noopener" target="_blank">education specialist</a> in order to complete your application at Tampere University.</p>

<p><strong>Preview possible ISEP destinations from the ISEP's own portal</strong></p>

<p>The ISEP portal has the most up-to-date information on available ISEP destinations. Even though you are only applying to the ISEP programme in step 1 and not to a specific university, it's good to check possible available destinations, as you need to include also three possible options to your Mobility-Online application (step 1). Here is a sample search on how to browse these destinations:</p>

All bachelor's level courses completed abroad can also be <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/planning-studies-and-study-guidance/study-guidance-and-psp/recognition-prior-learning" rel="noopener" target="_blank">recognised</a> in your master's degree at Tampere University</li>
</ul>

<h3>How to apply to the ISEP programme (step 2) - application round to ISEP universities</h3>

<p>Students nominated by Tampere University for the ISEP exchange submit their actual application to the ISEP universities by using ISEP programme's own electronic application form. The ISEP coordinator at Tampere University provides guidelines for the applicants in this exchange programme. In this application, the applicant lists the destination universities he/she is interested in (a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10) among the ISEP universities available at that moment. The available universities are published on the ISEP website before the autumn and spring application deadlines. The ISEP Global Office places the applicant in one of his/her destinations of interest. The host university makes the final decision on the admitted students.</p>

<p>Due to the nature of the programme, the ISEP programme is best suited for applicants who are willing to apply to several North American exchange universities and these can be all over the United States as it is not possible to apply only to a specific state or city. The ISEP Global Office finds a place for 98 % of the students who apply to the United States, 99 % of whom are usually admitted by the host universities.</p>

<p>Please remember, that you are eligible to apply to <em>ISEP Exchange</em> destinations only, the <em>ISEP Direct</em> destinations have tuition fees. Also most US universities have only bachelor's level (undergraduate) courses available for exchange students.</p>

<h3>Language requirements and a mandatory English language test</h3>

<p>ISEP universities in English-speaking countries require that students take the TOEFL or IELTS language test. Also some other ISEP universities may also require an official language test. Usually the language proficiency is demonstrated by the TOEFL or IELTS language test. The required minimum scores can be found in the description of each university on the ISEP website. Applicants should register for the TOEFL or IELTS test <strong>as soon as they are selected</strong> in the first step by Tampere University. This means that you do not have to register for the language test before the first step of applying for ISEP exchange at Tampere University. However, you have to register to the language test right after you have been selected in the first step, as the call for ISEP applications (step 2) for the autumn semester exchange already ends on 1 March and for spring semester on 15 September. <p>Studies in English are available (in addition to English-speaking countries) for example in South Korea, Fiji, Ghana, South Africa, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, however, applying outside of North America is in most cases prohibited and is due to a special agreement. ISEP exchange programme is used mainly for student exchanges in North America.</p>

<h3>ISEP Exchange programme costs in the academic year 2024-25 (and partly for 2025-26):</h3>

<h4>ISEP’s application and placement fee</h4>

<p>ISEP application and placement fee is 525 €* (<a href="https://www.isepstudyabroad.org/programs/program-types-and-deadlines/isep-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">525 $</a>, which ISEP charges of each application Tampere University sends). The student has to pay the placement fee to Tampere University before his/her final application is sent to the ISEP Global Office. The fee is later <strong>deducted</strong> from the students’ ISEP programme fee. A part of the placement fee is reimbursed to the student, if ISEP cannot provide a placement for the student in any North American university. The placement fee is also reimbursed if the student cancels his/her application to study abroad because of an illness or another valid reason. If the student cancels the exchange because of other reasons, Tampere University is not eligible to get the placement fee back. After you have submitted your final ISEP application, non-recoverable costs will occur in all cases.</p>

<p><em>* 550 € for 2025-26 exchange studies</em></p>

<h4>ISEP programme fee</h4>

<p>In addition to the application and placement fee, the applicant must pay the ISEP programme fee before the exchange period, which covers student housing and full board (all meals) during the exchange period. The ISEP programme fee is 3 000 € (one semester) in the academic year 2024-25. During the exchange, room and board are free of charge. The room usually means a shared room of two persons on campus. The ISEP programme fee also includes your meals during your exchange studies (19 meals per week, a minimum), these meals are usually offered at campus restaurants, but in some cases you can get a meal stipend from the ISEP university, which will cover your meals. After the application and placement fee is paid, the rest payable amount to Tampere University is <strong>2 475 €</strong> (has to be paid before your ISEP exchange, installment is not possible). In expensive countries (North America) you will get much more back than you have paid to Tampere University - from North American universities you get a tuition fee waiver, a meal plan and campus housing that would normally cost tens of thousands euros. In the ISEP programme you are not required to take host university's expensive health insurance, the ISEP insurance is sufficient (see below)</p>

<h3>Funding an ISEP exchange</h3>

<p>Tampere University will pay a <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/funding-studies-abroad" rel="noopener" target="_blank">travel grant</a> to all selected students who pass the step 1 and 2. ISEP students are exempt from paying any tuition fees of the host university. More scholarships are available from different organisations and from the ISEP programme directly, if you are eligible: <a href="https://www.isepstudyabroad.org/planning/finances/study-abroad-scholarships/isep-community-scholarship" rel="noopener" target="_blank">ISEP Community Scholarship</a>, <a href="https://www.isepstudyabroad.org/planning/finances/study-abroad-scholarships/isep-founders-fellowship" rel="noopener" target="_blank">ISEP Founders Fellowship</a> and <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/funding-studies-abroad" rel="noopener" target="_blank">some other resources</a>. If you have been selected to the ISEP programme and placed to an ISEP university, you might be eligible to apply for housing allowance (both in your exchange destination and in Finland) and student financial aid from Kela, a student loan from your bank (available to Finnish citizens and, under certain conditions, to citizens of other countries) and a travel grant from Tampere University. <h3>ISEP Direct - a guaranteed placement at the university of your choice even in Australia</h3>

<p>Have you been dreaming about studies in Australia or New Zealand? In addition to the ISEP Exchange programme, it is also possible to apply for the <a href="https://www.isepstudyabroad.org/programs/program-types-and-deadlines/isep-direct" rel="noopener" target="_blank">ISEP Direct</a> programme where the outgoing student pays a tuition fee that covers the tuition and, in some universities also accommodation. The placement in the destination country/university is guaranteed, if you fulfill admission requirements of the host university. Several universities from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, China, Costa Rica and Ghana are involved in the ISEP Direct programme. The tuition fees are around 9 000 - 19 000 $ depending on the country (in Australia, the lowest fees are approximately 14 000 $). <p>Nordplus is a programme of the Nordic Council of Ministries supporting mobility, projects and networks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If you want to study <strong>in your field </strong>and Tampere University is a member of the Nordlys network in that field, you may get further information from the network’s mobility coordinator.&nbsp; If you cannot find a network in your field, you may apply for an exchange period via the <a href="http://www.nordlys.info">Nordlys network</a>, which is targeted to students in all fields. Apply for an exchange through the Nordlys network even if you want to study your minor subject during the exchange period. Today, almost all multidisciplinary Nordic universities are members of the Nordlys network. The most popular destinations have been universities in Copenhagen, Lund, Uppsala and Iceland. These universities are the hardest to find housing in and the study places in them may be highly competed. If you want to ensure that you are eligible for the exchange and are primarily looking at one of the popular universities, you should also include at least one other destination. Write your motivational letter and study plan in the language of study. If you intend to study in both English and the language of the host country, write your motivational letter in the language of that country. Each year, 10-15 students from Tampere University are selected for the Nordlys exchange.</p>

<p>You can get a grant of about €200 for each month spent in the exchange. The maximum amount of the grant is €660 to the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland and €330 to the other Nordic countries. Information about the grants is sent to the coordinator 2–4 months prior to the exchange. In addition, a student may be eligible for an accessibility grant if he/she has a mental or physical illness or an injury that will cause extra costs during the exchange, or for a family grant. Applications for the accessibility and family grants should be submitted to the University’s Nordplus coordinator.</p>

<p>From the academic year of 2019–2020, outgoing students in the Nordlys programme receive their grants from the Erasmus+ programme. The granted sums will conform to the Erasmus+ programme. All students selected in the Erasmus and Nordlys exchange will get further information and instructions well before the exchange period starts.</p>

Nordplus and Nordlys (Nordic countries)

<h3>General information about the north2north programme</h3>

<p>north2north is the internal student mobility programme of the University of the Arctic that is open for all degree students who have studied at least one academic year at Tampere University. The University of the Arctic (UArctic) is a cooperative network of universities, higher education institutions and other institutes. The aim of the north2north programme is to foster student exchange in order to support reciprocal knowledge and awareness about the North and promote high-quality education in northern regions. Tampere University has been a member of the north2north programme since 2014.</p>

<p>The north2north programme supports student mobility mainly in the Nordic countries, Svalbard, France, Scotland and North America. The possible student exchange destinations in North America or in Scotland are confirmed very late in December, so be sure to attend possible information sessions or see the additional information below.</p>

<h3>How to apply to the north2north programme</h3>

<p>The north2north programme is best suited to applicants who are able to consider <strong>several north2north destination universities</strong>. The main application round for the north2north programme is the <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">winter round</a>, but Nordic countries might be also available during <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">supplementary application rounds</a> as well. Please also note that it is not possible to apply for destinations in Finland or Russia through the programme. north2north exchanges are therefore suitable for applicants who can find a suitable study programme at more than one north2north university.</p>

<p>Applications for north2north exchange are open to all degree students from all study fields, but please note that north2north exchanges are limited to <strong>one semester</strong>. With the exception of clinical medicine, all north2north disciplines represented by the participating universities can be studied during the exchange semester.</p>

<h3>Applying to the north2north exchange programme (1st phase) - Tampere University's application round</h3>

<p>The north2north programme is available in the <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">winter round</a>, which is also the main application period for the north2north programme. north2north may occasionally also be included in the <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">supplementary application rounds</a>, but always check the instructions on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Application instructions for student exchange</a>. It is recommended to apply to the north2north programme through the main application round for the autumn or spring semester of the following academic year. Applying to the north2north destination is a two-step process.</p>

<p>In the Tampere University's <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">exchange application</a>, the <strong>north2north programme</strong> can be a single destination (although you can apply for more than one exchange destinations in the application form). Be sure to include information about at least <strong>three different north2north universities</strong> you are interested in. These three universities can be listed in your preliminary study plan under the north2north exchange programme. List at least four courses for each north2north university that you would be interested in in your preliminary study plan. In your motivation letter, you can also explain more why you are interested in applying to these north2north universities. <p>Only the north2north programme website has the most up-to-date information on available north2north exchange destinations. <strong>In the 1st phase you are applying to the north2north programme and not to a specific university</strong>, but you should still think about which three universities you would be interested in going to (by listing three north2north universities and study plans).</p>

<p>Please note that <strong>North American</strong> and <strong>Scottish</strong> exchange destinations only offer bachelor's level student exchanges and north2north exchanges are always <strong>one semester long</strong>. Admission to a particular north2north university is affected by the number of applicants to each university in the Nordic countries. Master's level students are also entitled to apply for a bachelor's level student exchange and all (bachelor's level) courses passed during exchange studies can also be credited towards your master's degree at Tampere University.</p>

<h3>Available study fields and courses, grants and the mobility period</h3>

<p>Check the available study fields and courses from the <a href="https://www.uarctic.org/activities/north2north/where-can-i-go/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">profile pages of the north2north universities</a>. The north2north programme offers students the opportunity to improve their knowledge about the current issues and problems in the northern region and the people who live there. The studies during the exchange are recommended to be related to the North or the Arctic, but it is not a requirement. However, students who have completed online courses from the <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/curriculum-and-study-opportunities/study-possibilities/courses-offered-university-networks" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Circumpolar Studies programme</a> yield extra points when applying for a north2north exchange.</p>

<p>The north2north mobility period is usually for <strong>3–6 months</strong> and, if necessary, students selected in the programme may also apply for the <a href="https://www.oph.fi/en/programmes/special-needs-grant-higher-education-exchange-programmes" rel="noopener" target="_blank">special needs grant</a>. All students will receive <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/funding-studies-abroad" rel="noopener" target="_blank">a north2north mobility grant</a> according to their exchange destination, a tuition fee waiver, but are responsible for travel, living and other expenses related to exchange studies abroad.</p>

<h3>Applying to the north2north university (2nd phase)</h3>

<p>Students who are selected for the north2north programme and a specific north2north university in the Tampere University's exchange application process (1st phase), will make their actual application&nbsp;to the destination university in accordance with the instructions given. Final acceptance is always decided by the host north2north university.</p>

<h2>General information about the QSEP exchange programme</h2>

<p><a href="http://echanges-etudiants.bci-qc.ca" rel="noopener" target="_blank">BCI (Bureau de Coopération Interuniversitaire)</a> is an organisation that represents universities in Québec, the French-speaking province&nbsp;of Canada. It has student exchange agreements with over 400 universities, which are located in over 20 countries. Tampere University has a bilateral student exchange agreement with BCI, which involves seven Canadian French-speaking universities. The exchange programme's name in English is <a href="https://echanges-etudiants.bci-qc.ca/en/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Quebec Student Exchange Program (QSEP)</a> and in French <a href="https://echanges-etudiants.bci-qc.ca/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Programme québécois d’échanges étudiants (PQÉÉ)</a>. Tampere University may send several applications to QSEP universities and an QSEP exchange period can take one or two semesters.</p>

<h2>How to apply to QSEP</h2>

<p>All degree students from Tampere University from all study fields are eligible to apply to QSEP programme and the QSEP exchange period can last from <strong>one to two semesters</strong>. With the exception of clinical medicine, all QSEP disciplines from participating universities can be studied during the exchange semester. QSEP allow you to study in different faculties, but most studies are offered <strong>in French</strong> (the required French language proficiency level for university studies is B2). You can apply to QSEP during <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/application-instructions-student-exchange" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Autumn or Winter round</a>, sometimes QSEP might be open during supplementary rounds as well.</p>

<p>Applying to QSEP is a two-step process. The first step is the application round that takes place at Tampere University (1st step) and only those approved in this first step will be eligible to apply to QSEP universities through the QSEP's own application portal (2nd step) for the following academic year. Please note, that QSEP can be a single application destination (out of several possible in the application form) and your motivation letter and a preliminary study plan should be addressed to at least one QSEP university.</p>

<p>When applying for a QSEP exchange, you will be required to have a good knowledge of the language of the host university (French or English), which you will demonstrate at the 2nd application stage in accordance with the requirements of the host university (i.e. language certificates are not required for the application round at Tampere University). You can also start your French language studies from the basics. Master's level students are also eligible to apply for a bachelor's level student exchange and all bachelor's level courses taken during the exchange can also be recognised for the master's degree.</p>

<h2>English-taught studies at QSEP universities</h2>

<p>English-taught teaching is only available in French as a second language programmes (see above) and in three degree programmes at <a href="https://echanges-etudiants.bci-qc.ca/en/ecole/universite-laval/#conditions" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Université Laval</a> (Québec City):</p>

<h2>University's travel grant for QSEP exchanges and about the health insurance</h2>

<p>Students selected for the QSEP programme will receive <a href="https://www.tuni.fi/en/students-guide/handbook/uni/internationalisation-during-studies/apply-student-exchange-0/funding-studies-abroad" rel="noopener" target="_blank">a travel grant from the university</a>, are exempt from all tuition fees, but are responsible for their own accommodation and living expenses, as well as any additional costs associated with the exchange. Finland has its own social security agreement with the Province of Québec, so <a href="https://www.ramq.gouv.qc.ca/en/citizens/health-insurance/social-security-agreements-other-countries" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Finnish citizens are not required</a> to take the RAMQ health insurance.</p>
