Accessibility and special arrangements
The term “accessibility” refers to an environment that affords everyone an equal opportunity to work or study regardless of their personal characteristics. The obligation to promote accessibility is based, among others, on the Non-Discrimination Act (1325/2014).
Tampere Universities are committed to taking accessibility into consideration in all our activities. For example, our Facilities Management staff develop the accessibility of physical facilities and our IT Services staff develop the accessibility of web content and electronic services.
If you need individualised support because of a learning difficulty, an illness or disability, you are eligible for special arrangements. Special arrangements may not undermine academic standards or the integrity of assessments. They are provided to help students, who would otherwise be put at a substantial disadvantage by their condition, achieve the expected learning outcomes. Our special arrangements policy promotes equality of opportunity by enabling reasonable adjustments to be made to help all our students undertake and demonstrate learning.
The special examination facilities of Tampere University are available to all the members of the Tampere university community.
The special arrangements policy is included in our Guidelines for the Supervision of Students.
Tampere University promotes accessibility in learning by embedding diversity in the curriculum and offering flexible opportunities for students to complete their studies. For example, we offer all our students alternative options for undertaking and demonstrating learning. These options are described in more detail in our study guides. They are offered to promote the effective academic progress of all our students.
Sometimes the flexible study opportunities are not enough to support a student’s academic progress. If you have a diagnosed learning difficulty or an illness or disability that affects your ability to demonstrate and undertake learning, you may be eligible for special arrangements. Special arrangements may not undermine academic standards or the integrity of assessments. They are provided to help students, who would otherwise be put at a substantial disadvantage by their condition, achieve the expected learning outcomes. Only highly exceptional circumstances would justify a departure from the standard degree structure or course learning outcomes; the decision to grant this type of adjustment would have to be made by the student’s faculty.
Teachers may grant adjustments on a case-by-case basis to students who do not have a University-issued Proposal for Special Adjustments but have a visible injury or illness that they are expected to recover from in a few weeks’ time. Teachers do not have to require these students to present a medical certificate. The purpose of these adjustments is to support the academic progress and wellbeing of the student.
Personal discussions are conducted with all students who need individualised support and/or a University-issued Proposal for Special Arrangements. If you need individualised support or special arrangements because of an illness, disability or learning difficulty, please schedule a personal appointment: firstname.lastname@example.org. The personal appointment offers you the opportunity to discuss your needs, goals and potential special arrangements with one of our counsellors. During the appointment, you may receive a Proposal for Special Arrangements and may, if necessary, be referred to the study psychologist or other support services.
Special arrangements at Tampere Universities
The Proposals for Special Arrangements that have been issued by Tampere University of Technology or the University of Tampere before 1 January 2019 will remain in force at the new Tampere University. Students who have been issued a Learning Support Voucher by TAMK need to book an appointment with the Educational Support Services to receive a Proposal for Special Arrangements, so that they are able to request special arrangements if they want to complete studies offered by Tampere University.
Students may take reading tests and math tests, if necessary. If the experts responsible for the special arrangements policy recommend an individual student to undergo such a test, Tampere University will commission the testing services from an external service provider.
The faculties are responsible for providing special arrangements for applicants during entrance examinations. The Admissions Office provides special arrangements for applicants who are seeking admission to master’s programmes through the national joint application system.
