Learning outcomes
  • After completing the Master's Degree Programme in Materials Science and Engineering, leading to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, the student:

    - knows the main methods of seeking information and data, is able to apply the gathered information to solve problems, and choose the appropriate scientific methods for each problem. This particular competence underlines the importance of materials science as an interfacial area of study between natural and engineering sciences. Additionally, the student has the ability to process and analyse gathered information in a critical way following the research and professional ethics of their field. The recognising, acquiring and applying information to solve problems is learned in practice in the Master's Thesis, various exercises and laboratory works as well as their reporting throughout the degree.

    - has the competence to apply the latest and most relevant research results in natural and materials science into the development of different products, services or business activities in the industry. The student is capable of economic thinking in their field, and able to manage their own work in a goal-oriented manner in working life. The importance of following scientific research in materials science is highlighted in the degree by various exercises on information retrieval, and the competence of applying new information to solve problems rapidly is acquired through different applied exercises and practical works.

    - has the competence to apply diverse ways of communication to present their own research results, deductions and expertise to professionals in Finland and internationally, whether they represent materials science or any other professional and academic field such as medicine, physics, mechanical engineering or law, to name a few. The student is able to work as a member of the community in various expert, development and management positions, and to engage in constructive and expert societal debate. These vital communication skills are practiced throughout the degree in cross-disciplinary group exercises.

    - understands the importance of digitalisation in their field, and is able to utilise the digital operating environments available. The student's information and communications technology skills develop throughout the degree in various exercises and reports, for instance. After achieving the previous mentioned learning outcomes, students will meet the prerequisites for pursuing a PhD / Doctoral degree and continuous learning.
