Learning outcomes


The objective of doctoral education is that students:

1. become well-versed in their own field of research and its societal significance;
2. gain the knowledge and skills required to apply scientific or artistic research methods independently and critically and produce new scientific or artistic knowledge;
3. become conversant with the developments, basic problems and research methods in their own field of research and related fields; and
4. gain such knowledge of the general theory of science and of other disciplines related to their own field of research as to enable the students to follow developments in them;
5. gain the necessary communication and language skills and other competencies to pursue challenging professional careers and international collaboration

Students who pursue a postgraduate degree at the University shall comply with the guidelines set forth by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.

Content description

Doctors graduating from Tampere University are well-versed in their field of research and its significance. They have knowledge and skills required to apply scientific or artistic research methods independently and critically, to produce new scientific or artistic knowledge and to follow developments in their research field. They have sufficient communication and language skills and other working life competencies for serving in extensive and demanding expert and development duties and in international cooperation.

After completing the Doctor of Science in Technology degree at The Faculty of Engineering Sciences the doctoral student has the skills and competencies needed to pursue a state of the art expert or research career associated with engineering sciences. The Engineering Sciences programme covers the following research fields: Automation Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Production Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. The Engineering Sciences programme is closely focused on technology and utilizes many high-quality research environments. Doctors graduating from Engineering Sciences will have excellent substance related core competencies, scientific and communication skills to operate effectively with international experts/communities connected strongly to the industry as well as to the internationally highly ranked academia.

The Doctoral program of Engineering Sciences has strong industrial relevance. Our graduates can refine industrial challenges into scientific research questions, apply scientific methods to acquire new data, critically evaluate and analyse the data to answer the research questions, and finally communicate the results and new knowledge both to the industry and the academia. The graduates understand various career options and are able to apply their skills and knowhow both in the industry and the academia.
