Core content
  • Laws of thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, properites of real gases. Basic principles for experimental determination of thermodynamic quantities. Chemical bond energies and their effect in chemical reactions.
  • Calculating entrypy changes for the system and its surroundings in different situations and chemical reactions. Gibbs and Helmholtz energies. condotions for spontaneous processes. Chemical potential.
  • Phasediagrams. Relative stabilities for solid substances, liquids and gases. Theoretical background of phase diagrams.
  • Ideal and real solutions, colligative properties.
  • Special characteristics of electrolyte solutions. Activities and activity coefficients in electrolyte solutions. Ionic strength.
Complementary knowledge
  • Mathematical properties of state functions. Real gas laws and their applications ranges.
  • Differential equations for state functions and the interconnections of thermodynamic quantities with each other.
  • Partially miscible solutions
  • The effect of ionic strength to solubility and equilibrium concentrations.
