International outlook and global responsibility

In this class, students will become acquainted with linguistic theories that approach identities as constructed in and through discourse. We will start by describing discursive approaches emerging over the last decades that have contributed to identity studies, including politeness theory and relational work. We will look at linguistic identity construction across both online and offline contexts, with special attention on the recent developments tied to the rise of social media and personal branding. This will be done by addressing the three major strands of human identity: personal identity, group identity and collective identity.
