{"id":9705,"date":"2021-06-09T12:17:50","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T09:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tuni.fi\/playlab\/?p=9705"},"modified":"2021-06-09T12:17:50","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T09:17:50","slug":"petscop-the-greatest-game-youll-never-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tuni.fi\/playlab\/petscop-the-greatest-game-youll-never-play\/","title":{"rendered":"Petscop \u2013 The Greatest Game You\u2019ll Never Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span dir=\"ltr\">Meet Paul, our host and f<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">irst<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">time <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Let<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s Player<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">, as he guides us through the ab<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">andoned <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">techn<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">icoloured dreamworld of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"><em>Petscop<\/em>. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">This quiet and unassuming man has invited us all <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">to be <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">witness to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">lost media, to an unfini<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">shed game which many had previously thoug<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ht to be a myth. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Thanks to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Paul, we have the opportunity to explore the many corners of this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">crunchy looking <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Playstation <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">game, with all its unfinished textures and obscure game mechanics still intact. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Developer <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Garalina<\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">magnum opus is a fami<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">liar blend of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">bright colours, cheery p<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">linky<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">plonk <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">music, and veil<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ed child abuse. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Although Paul<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s personal connection to the game is unknown, he has <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">curated for us a look into the greatest game you<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ve n<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ever played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\">Throughout the 2<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">4<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">episode run of the <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Petscop <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Let<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s Play <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">series, the ficti<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ti<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ous nature of <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Petscop <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">as a game was kep<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">t <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">deliberately <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">obscure<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. No credits to look through, no <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">promotional <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Twitter <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">page, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">just sparsel<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">y <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">uploaded game footage, cryptically commented on by Paul, the purported owner of the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">channel. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">If I were to detail out the specifics of the plot itself, none of it would be too un<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">famil<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">iar to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">fans of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">copypasta<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">th<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">e shared horror stories that filled the early internet. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Man is gifted an <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">early copy <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of a video<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">game<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, game features <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">elemen<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ts that suggest it is haunted<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, man is swept awa<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">y by the h<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">orror <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of it all, etc<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8230; <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">But <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Petscop <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">sets itself apart <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">from its forebears with its <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">sense of authenticity<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">subtlety of its slowly<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">building terror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\">Something that d<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">evelopers can le<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">arn from this fictitious game is how exactly it manages to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">prickl<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">e your goosebumps. The sy<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">nthesis of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">horror and gameplay <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">mechanics has often necessitated <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">agency over the events happening, the player having some manner of control <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">o<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ver <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">their fate in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">game world<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">And traditionally, this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">results in either shooty<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">bang<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">banging of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">enemi<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">es or the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">anticipation of jump-<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">scares. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Experiences <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">more a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">kin to rollercoasters. Important information ab<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">out game mechanics and how they relate back <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">to Paul<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s re<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">al life is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">with<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">held, leaving the grotesque implications left <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">for us to piece together <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">oursel<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ves. This isn<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">t the blunt <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">excitement of a <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Resident Evil <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">monster spitting acid in our face. This is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"><em>Resident Evil<\/em> <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">door<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">opening transition, where we slowly guess a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">t what is in store for us. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Retro <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">video game<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">are <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">prime fodder for this kind of creepiness, the abstraction of old graphics leaving a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">lot <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">more to the imagination<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, which is the p<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">erfect tool to really get under the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\">This webs<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">eries format also <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">promotes <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">playfulness <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">in of itself, working as a kind of aug<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">mented <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">reality game, inviting the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">view<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">er to become a <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Petscop <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">detective. The obscure nature of th<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">e writing <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">created a cottage ind<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ustry o<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">f <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">YouTube <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">videos and web forums meant to explore, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">undercover, and work out what <\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\">Petscop <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\">really <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">means<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Fans s<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">couring through website data to find <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">who the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2018<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">real<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">owners are <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">and how they relate to Paul. F<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">an<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s becoming <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"><em>Wikipedia<\/em> <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">warr<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">iors to better <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">comprehend what each character is in reference to. It<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2019<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s fun.
