In their article\u00a0<\/span>Unlocking Student Engagement: Creation, Adaptation, and Application of an Educational Escape Room Across Three Pharmacy <\/a>Campuses<\/span><\/i>\u00a0Heidi Eukel, Jeanne Frenzel, Kyle Frazier, and Micah Miller<\/span>\u00a0provide an example of using escape rooms for teaching. The team\u00a0<\/span>assembled an educational escape room to\u00a0<\/span>increase knowledge of diabetes management for the participating pharmaceutical students.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>diabetes\u00a0<\/span>escape room<\/span>, as the researchers called it,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wa<\/span>s successfully implemented at three different universities across the United States<\/span>, with a total of over 300 students participating<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The escape room<\/span>\u00a0consist<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>five puzzles<\/span>, the four first ones giving the clues to solving the final puzzl<\/span>e, which when solved\u00a0<\/span>would\u00a0<\/span>grant access to a lifesaving treatment for an imaginary patient<\/span>. In order to solve the puzzles\u00a0<\/span>students had to demonstrate diabetes<\/span>–<\/span>related treatment and management skills<\/span>, such as using an insulin pen and\u00a0<\/span>performing a diabetic foot exam.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The students competed in groups of five a 75-minute time limit.\u00a0<\/span>After a successful escape, a debriefing was held to\u00a0<\/span>let students\u00a0<\/span>reflect<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on what was learned.\u00a0<\/span>The research team notes that the\u00a0<\/span>students<\/span>\u00a0were\u00a0applying\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>knowledge<\/span>\u00a0they\u00a0<\/span>already<\/span>\u00a0had, rather\u00a0<\/span>than learning entirely new subjects, as\u00a0<\/span>they had received traditional education on the subject nine months prior.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier research has shown that escape rooms can be used in support of traditional education<\/span>\u00a0to promote student engagement. The\u00a0<\/span>researchers<\/span>\u00a0note that pharmacists play a vital role in\u00a0<\/span>educating patients on diabetes management<\/span>, and thus need hands-on learning experiences in the subject<\/span>\u00a0in question<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, the research team concluded that\u00a0<\/span>educational escape rooms are positively received by students and meet their pedagogical requirements<\/span>\u00a0and goals<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Budgeting wasn\u2019t an issue as the diabetes escape room cost only 100<\/span>\u00a0$ to assemble.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Also, when implementing the escape room on the other campuses it was found that the concept was adaptable and transferable<\/span>, even\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0use in other courses.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
