Biases aren\u2019t inherently negative, but in the context of the research, they were generally assumed to be. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The article lists several strengths and weaknesses in using games as a means of reducing bias. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research in the field has found that games can help to support a professional development experience for practitioners, meaning th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0schools and such<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0could benefit from using games as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">part<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of their anti-bias teaching<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0convenient, as games were also identified as platforms for learning communities that operate through social interactio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n and co-operation.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The learning experience was also sound to be more impactful as games can encourage reflection and are efficient<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">giving feedback.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Research on bias reductions suggests that empathy, perspective-taking, and compassion are key to help improve <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attitudes towards marginalized groups. Gaming offers countless opportunities to place yourself in someone <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">else&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0shoes, and consequently can be used as an effective tool<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> However, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Schrier<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> reminds us, that the games need to be specifically <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">designed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with the goal of reducing bias in mind, or the effect could be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">insignificant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or even negative.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Many games are played through avatars, which can be used for self-expression and experimentation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Identifying with characters has been shown to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">support students in systematically biased environments, such as women in STEM fields.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are some risks to using games as a means to reduce bias. Sometimes they will simply fail to meet their desired goals. Games used in educations <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">should<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tailored<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to fit the spe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cific\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">group that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is being educated, so a one-size-fits-all solution doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some biases can also be left unnoticed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when designing the game<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as biases are ingrained deeply into society and societal norms.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Schrier<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> concludes on remarks that more research is needed to fully understand the potential for games as a means to reduce bias.
