If you miss the glory days of old-school text-driven adventure games and have a soft spot in your\u00a0heart for cyberpunk (and extremely cute robots), Read Only Memories is right up your alley.<\/p>\n
Set in the neon-tinged future of 2064, you play as a freelance journalist whose inventor friend\u00a0Hayden has vanished. Fortunately Hayden’s latest invention, the world’s first sapient robot named\u00a0Turing, is here to help you track down his kidnappers and unravel a corporate conspiracy. The story\u00a0involves many traditional sci-fi themes, especially genetic and cybernetic modification of humans,\u00a0and the game’s perspective on these themes is quite refreshing.<\/p>\n
The game uses a point-and-click gameplay style, where you click around to explore the streets of\u00a0Neo San Francisco. You’ll spend most of your time looking for clues or interrogating NPCs, many\u00a0of whom are a joy to talk to, and solving a few simple puzzles here and there.<\/p>\n
The sounds and visuals hit all the right spots: The pixel art may not be the best around, but it is\u00a0certainly stylish, using just the right amount of neon pinks you would expect from a cyberpunk\u00a0game. The soundtrack sets the mood nicely, though none of the songs are especially memorable,\u00a0and the noise the characters make when they talk sadly gets a bit grating by the end of the game.<\/p>\n
Read Only Memories is not for everyone, but will definitely strike a nerve with certain players. If\u00a0you’re not sure, give the demo a shot: Then you’ll know which group you belong to.<\/p>\n
