These last couple of weeks I have been grinding through the 2022 action-adventure LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and I have been having the time of my life! The game’s story mode takes the player through the stories of the nine Star Wars films that are considered to be the main saga. In addition, the players can play the main story or explore the galaxy in free play, with the selection of hundreds of Star Wars characters.
This game differs a lot from the previous LEGO games. There are more side quests and collectibles than ever before and the game’s got the most advanced open-world gameplay. The graphics are unbelievable and during the cinematics it truly feels like you’re watching a movie. Aside from being a lot more technologically advanced than its predecessors, the biggest difference is that the characters can talk, which adds a whole new layer to the story and the side quests. In homage to the older LEGO games, the game can be changed to mumble mode, although there still is subtitled dialogue.
I think that the Galaxy free play is the brightest star of the game. I have wholeheartedly enjoyed exploring all of the different planets and the outer space in free play, trying to complete all of the fun little side missions and objectives. There are over 1200 collectibles to collect, some can be obtained by solving clever puzzles or climbing to difficult places for example, and some from story mode or by completing side missions. There are side missions where the player must explore around multiple planets, chasing down Bounty Hunters or collecting exotic flowers. There is even one where the player must help a Jedi who has had their identity stolen. These are only a few examples from the 140 side missions.
I have been talking about the free play mode enough, so I must say a few things about the story mode too. The best thing about story mode is when I can see the classic scenes from my favourite movies from the saga come to life in the game. In true LEGO game fashion, they manage to make even the most gruesome and devastating parts of the movies funny, with their creatively comedic touch in the dialogue, story and small details. The only reason I haven’t fully completed the story mode is that I have a hard time completing the missions from the movies that I didn’t personally like that much, especially the newest trilogy. If you’re a fan of all of the movies, this won’t be a problem at all then.
The biggest minus but also a plus is the co-op split-screen. It is a plus because the game is much more entertaining to play with a friend, and the game has made the split-screen so that the players can be as far away from each other as possible, as long as they are in the same city/planet. The split screen’s minus is that it tends to be a bit clumsy, and it may be difficult to complete some puzzles in split-screen, since the players get half of the vision from the usual. I wish that the split-screen mode was made by dividing the screen horizontally rather than vertically, since it would give the same, much more useful, horizontal vision as single-player mode. The split-screen takes some time getting used to, but if you prioritize having fun with a friend instead of unproblematic player experience and better vision, the split-screen is a big plus.
If you’re a fan of Star Wars, I can recommend giving this game a try. The galaxy and its diverse planets and citizens are worth getting to know. May the force be with you on your explorations!
