In her doctoral dissertation, MSc (Tech) Madona Mekhael explored how to control light generated by nonlinear metasurfaces. These are optical surfaces hundreds of times thinner than a human hair, patterned with nanostructures that can create light at new wavelengths when illuminated by a laser. By controlling the phase of light, the timing of its waves, in three different ways, she enhanced the generated light about tenfold, showed that it can be tuned simply by rotating the surface, and shaped it only at selected wavelengths. The results are a step toward compact, adjustable optical components for future laser, imaging and quantum technologies.
The doctoral dissertation titled Phase Engineering of Nonlinear Optical Processes in Metasurfaces by MSc (Tech) Madona Mekhael will be publicly examined in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University on 13 November 2026. The dissertation is in the field of Physics.
The Opponent will be Professor Crina Cojocaru from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain. The Custos will be Adjunct Professor Mikko Huttunen from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.
