Alireza Charmforoushan: Greener nanobioceramics from a hydrogen flame

In his doctoral dissertation, Alireza Charmforoushan developed Liquid Flame Spray (LFS) method for the synthesis of nanostructured calcium phosphate bioceramics. His findings provide a faster, simpler, greener, and more scalable approach for producing nanobioceramics using water-based liquid precursors without organic solvents, surfactants, or additional post-treatments. As there is a growing need for nanostructured bioceramics, Charmforoushan’s work contributes to the development of more sustainable and environmentally responsible synthesis technologies aligned with global sustainability goals.

The flame-based aerosol process developed by Charmforoushan can produce advanced bioceramic nanomaterials with exceptionally high surface areas and unique nanoscale structures while eliminating the energy-intensive post-processing steps commonly required by conventional synthesis routes. Since calcium phosphate bioceramics are already used in a wide variety of applications, for example in healthcare, dentistry, food products and environmental technologies, the developed method has the potential to benefit numerous existing and emerging technologies.

The doctoral dissertation of MSc Alireza (Kourosh) Charmforoushan in the field of Aerosol Physics titled Synthesis of Nanostructured Calcium Phosphate Bioceramics by Liquid Flame Spray Method will be publicly examined at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University on Friday 21 August 2026.

The Opponent will be Assistant Professor Andreas Güntner from the ETH Zürich in Switzerland. The Custos will be Professor Jyrki Mäkelä from the Physics Unit, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University.
