Can you do reliable human cell experiments on your office-table without depending on specialised labs? According to the doctoral dissertation of Dhanesh Rajan the answer is a resounding yes, for instance, using the new modular cell culturing system which combines tools for in-vitro cultivation and integrated measurements!

We have been facing unprecedented challenges in the healthcare sector repeatedly in recent years. Combining advanced measurement tools with biology to produce easily accessible, non-traditional systems will be the best way to tackle new challenges well in time.

Cell culturing is important in cell biology to produce therapeutic agents, vaccines, antibodies and to study disease formations. Traditionally, cells in dedicated labs are cultured in flasks, multi-well plates or petri dishes where integration of advanced sensor systems are tricky. Emerging challenges demand measurements of multiple parameters all through the culture, which require systems beyond conventional scopes.

MSc (Tech) Dhanesh Rajan has in his doctoral research developed a portable cell culturing system with a novel modular microscopy that is combined with simultaneous cardiac mechanical activity measurement, electrophysiology and chemical sensing. A new non-contact method for online pH estimation was also developed.

These systems have been applied for validation and biocompatibility testing of a new oxygen sensor, automated thermal analysis of cardiac cells and is currently used in the cardiac ischemia on-a-chip disease model.

“The experimental results will give new insights into the pathophysiology of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cardiac hypoxia. Also, the new tools facilitate automated studies, for example, doing drug screening experiments on your office table”, Rajan says.

The doctoral dissertation of Dhanesh Rajan in the field of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering titled Modular Instrumentation for Controlling and Monitoring In-Vitro Cultivation Environment and Image-based Functionality Measurements of Human Stem Cells will be publicly examined in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University at 12 o’clock on Wednesday 27 May 2020.
