Tampere Summer School: Social programme

Join our social events and get to know your fellow students, the city of Tampere and the Finnish way of life

Tampere Summer School is not only about studying. All Summer School students are invited to join our Social Programme! Some social programme events are free of charge, others have a separate fee.

Social programme 2019 will be published in spring 2019! Meanwhile, you can check the 2018 programme and see some photos in our social media channels: Facebook and Instagram.

Enrollment instructions will be sent to admitted students in the summer. Enrolment is required for all activities and events. All Social Programme fees are collected upon enrolment and they are non-refundable.

Sightseeing bus tour

During a city bus tour, students get to see all the best sights and hear all the exciting stories of Tampere.

Abseiling down the Pyynikki tower

A great way to test one's courage is to abseil down a 26-meter tower wall at Pyynikki observation tower! Read more: Kelo ja Kallio adventures.

After abseiling, participants have the opportunity to enjoy coffee or tea and the best fresh doughnuts in town (at own cost).

Vapriikki museum: Tampere 1918 exhibition

One hundred years ago Finland was divided by a bloody civil war. Tampere was one of the most important battle sites, and bullet holes are still visible in some old buildings in the city centre. Vapriikki, the largest museum in Tampere, houses an exhibition focusing on the events in Tampere in spring 1918. The exhibition presents a large cross-section of a society at war, from children and the elderly to workers and factory managers.

After the guided tour in the 1918 exhibition, students have an opportunity to explore other exhibitions in Vapriikki at their own pace.

Canoeing & campfire

Enjoy great company and amazing landscapes while canoeing on Lake Näsijärvi! Students paddle in a big canoe (6-8 people) and are taken care of by the instructors of Hiking Travel Hit. The journey takes you to Tapatora island, where you will be enjoying coffee and some food around a campfire before paddling back.

Finnish food evening

Have you ever tried Karelian pastries, the Finnish savory delicacy with rice pudding inside a rye dough? Nothing is better than home-made Karelian pastries fresh from the oven! During the Finnish food evening, you learn how to make these pastries yourself. The menu also includes a tasty soup and a dessert.

Sauna Evening at Viikinsaari Island

Interested in trying out the traditional Finnish sauna and taking a dip in a beautiful Finnish lake? This is for you! Students get to spend the evening at Viikinsaari Island in, a verdant summer haven, located only 20 minutes away from Tampere city centre. Bring your own towel and bathing suit! Visit to Moomin Museum

The only Moomin Museum in the world opened in Tampere Hall in June 2017. Tove Jansson's original Moomin illustrations are a key part of the museum’s atmosphere. They tell where it all began and what Moomins were like when they were brought into this world by Tove Jansson’s pen. After the guided tour (45-60 minutes), students have time to explore the collection themselves or visit the museum shop.

Picnic & Games

Spend some time with your fellow students in a relaxed atmosphere! Some snacks are offered by the university, but you can also bring your own.

Kickbikes & campfire

This tour takes you to the forest around Tampere on a kickbike! The tour includes a break at Niihama cottage, where you are able to grill some food on a campfire, play games and maybe find some blueberries.

  • location: The tour starts on the central campus and ends at Kaupinoja, Lake Näsijärvi, where students can either walk or take the bus back to centre (bus at own cost)
