After the course, the student has a generic understanding of the field of solid state physics as the most extensive subfield of modern physics today. The student understands the basic classical and quantum mechanical concepts behind the description of matter and different materials. The student has knowledge and understanding of lattice structures, metals, semiconductors, magnetism, dielectrics, superconductivity, nanostructures, and artificial condensed matter systems.
