New professions will continue to emerge in both the public and private sectors, locally, nationally and globally. The continuously changing fields of safety and security management and engineering require innovative in-depth knowledge and skills that are based on interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies. Organisations and other societal actors from the public, private and third sector need highly qualified professionals with a thorough understanding of security governance, societal security and resilience, internal and everyday security, risk management, international security politics as well as crisis management and leadership.

The Master’s Programme in Security and Safety Management (SAFER) responds to this demand by educating experts who specialise in either Security Governance or Safety Management and Engineering. Depending on their major, students graduate with the degree of Master’s Degree in Administrative Sciences, MSc (Admin) or Master of Science in Technology, MSc (Tech). The two majors have their own admission and degree requirements. Apart from the majors, the programme mainly consists of joint courses. Students enrolled in SAFER can also choose courses across any of the faculties at Tampere University.

One programme, two specialisation options

The two study specialisations (Security Governance and Safety Management and Engineering) have mutual general studies, followed by track-specific advanced studies resulting in two different degrees.
