The Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Engineering is a cross-disciplinary programme that gives you a solid grounding in several core fields of engineering. The major subjects available in the Computing and Electrical Engineering track are Signal Processing and Machine Learning, Software Development, Power Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Electronics and Embedded Systems.
The programme equips you with the competence to use scientific methods in your further studies, research or working life and to follow developments in the fields of engineering. By studying in a multicultural group with students from all over the world, you will also acquire strong language, communication and collaboration skills and the ability to operate in a multidisciplinary and international community. Besides providing a strong theoretical foundation for further studies in the fields of engineering, the programme places special emphasis on internationality, employability and connections to the industry. With this unique combination, the programme makes you well-prepared for the international world of research and industry.
When first admitted to the Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Engineering you are granted the right to study towards a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree at Tampere University. After completing the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, you will have multiple options to choose from among the Master’s programmes offered in English at Tampere University.
The programme is conducted entirely in English, meaning that all courses, exams and student services are arranged in English. Consequently, proficiency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite.
The studies of all international students in the Bachelor’s programme include compulsory courses in the Finnish language. The courses give you a good working knowledge of the language for everyday situations.
During the first year of your Bachelor’s studies, you will attend introductory courses and basic courses in key subjects that are important to all engineering students regardless of their major. These include mathematics, physics, chemistry, industrial management, programming and languages. You will progress onto major and minor studies in your second and third year. You will choose one major from five possibilities: Signal Processing and Machine Learning, Software Development, Power Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Electronics and Embedded Systems. Your major will include the Bachelor’s thesis. In addition to your major, you will complete a minor subject module of your choice.
We are committed to investing in new and innovative learning environments and encourage the use of new technological solutions to continuously develop the quality of teaching and learning. The Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Engineering makes use of various teaching methods. Courses often consist of a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory work, tutorials, group work, assignments, independent study and an examination. Students at Tampere University work both independently and in close collaboration with their fellow students. Besides developing their theoretical and analytical skills, our students learn to work independently, take responsibility for their studies, and become accustomed to communicating and working as part of a multicultural group.
Your eligibility to apply for admission to the different Master's programmes offered by Tampere University is determined based on the major and minor subjects included in your Bachelor’s degree.
In the Bachelor’s Programme in Science and Engineering, Computing and Electrical Engineering you may choose your major subject among these five options freely according to your own interests:
- Signal Processing and Machine Learning
- Software Development
- Power Engineering
- Communications Engineering
- Electronics and Embedded Systems
Signal Processing and Machine Learning
Signal processing and machine learning are central fields in the modern information technology and computer science. Emerging applications are vast varying from visual (computer vision), speech and audio recognition to autonomous robots and cars. A related field is data engineering which means machine learning algorithms applied to large datasets from finance, security, health, biology, Internet and so on. This module provides students strong practical knowledge and expertise on the main approaches and methodologies of machine learning and pattern recognition. Moreover, the students will have hands-on experience on the most emerging applications of these: computer vision, audio and speech processing and data engineering.
Software Development
Create the digital world! Software and digital devices are an inseparable part of the modern society as computers are integrated into systems from mobile devices to services in the cloud. Our daily lives are continuously made easier with innovative products that meet the users’ needs. There is a great need for professionals to sustainably develop these. An exceptionally large number of IT companies in the Tampere region provide opportunities to address real-life challenges in an inspiring and diverse environment. The research activities and their close collaboration with companies ensure that the contents of the study module are both relevant to the industry positions on the job market and on a high academic level. The module offers a good knowledge on software development, processes and databases as well as implementing web applications and understanding the interaction between users and technology. It also provides a good background for MSc studies at Tampere University, especially towards Software: Web and Cloud (Computing Sciences, MSc) and Human-Technology Interaction (Computing Sciences, MSc).
Power Engineering
Modern society builds on electricity. Electrical and electromagnetic natural phenomena are utilized in a variety of ways, covering e.g. the generation, transmission, distribution and usage of electrical energy. In the Power Engineering study module, you will learn how the fundamental electrical and electromagnetic phenomena can be utilized for solving modern engineering problems, such as solar and wind power generation and electric vehicles. The study module will also provide you a great background knowledge for MSc studies at Tampere University, especially in Smart Grids (Electrical Engineering, MSc).
Communications Engineering
The modern information society is strongly relying on broadband data communications and corresponding communication networks and services. This covers all areas of life, personal and professional. This trend is expected to continue and expand further, through the ongoing and all-encompassing digitalization process, which will eventually penetrate all industries and the whole society. This, together with the emerging Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet (or Industry 4.0) paradigms, raises the capacity, latency and other performance requirements of the communication networks, and wireless communications in particular, to a whole new level compared to the existing systems and solutions. Another prevailing trend in the society and industries is related to robotization and other different autonomous moving objects and machines, such as self-driving cars and drones, which also rely strongly on highly efficient and reliable wireless communications solutions. Digitalization, IoT and robotization are all areas that are also strongly connected to high-efficiency wireless positioning and localization information, both indoors and outdoors. Through this major, the students learn the fundamental concepts, methods and tools of communications engineering, including the basic wired and wireless networking technologies, which build the basis of, e.g., 4G and 5G mobile radio networks and the Internet. The study module will also provide you a great background knowledge for MSc studies at Tampere University, specifically towards Communication System and Networks (Information Technology, MSc) and Wireless Communications and RF Systems (Electrical Engineering, MSc).
Electronics and Embedded Systems
Electronic circuits and embedded software make the consumer gadgets a reality. Vast majority of processor chips are not in computers but in embedded systems all around us. Electronics and embedded systems are the fundamental technology for almost anything around us, although often invisible to the users. Wearable devices, printable electronics, and hardware-software co-design are examples of current state-of-the-art Electronics and Embedded Systems research topics in Tampere University. The study module offers wide knowledge on the basics of analog and digital circuits, and embedded computing devices and software. It also provides good background for MSc studies at Tampere University, especially towards Embedded Systems (Information Technology, MSc) and Wireless Communications and RF Systems (Electrical Engineering, MSc).
Continuing to Master's studies
After completing the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, you are eligible to continue studies directly in one of Tampere University’s Master’s programmes in English. One study place per term provision in Finland
According to this provision, a student may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term. This rule applies to all higher education in Finland. Even if you register as absent or give up your study place, you cannot accept another study place starting in the same academic term. Accepting a study place Tampere University means that you cannot accept another study place for the same term in another Finnish higher education institution, or if you have accepted a study place elsewhere, you cannot accept a study place at Tampere University later. This is to ensure that as many applicants as possible get a study place every year.
The provision does not prevent you from accepting a study place in another degree programme during another academic term. The provision does not apply to studies at higher education institutions outside of Finland. For more information on this, please see Studyinfo.fi.
