After taking this course, the student
• will be able to identify the origin of polarized light and its kinds and distinguish the most common polarization effects that can occur in optical materials and polarization-altering devices.
• will be able to describe the polarization of light mathematically and calculate the polarization that emerges from a polarization-altering device using the Jones, Stokes, and Mueller formalisms.
• will be able to predict the imaging performance of thick lenses and optical systems using ray tracing, lens equations and ABCD matrix formalism under the paraxial regime.
• will be able to recognize the characteristics of Gaussian beams, calculate their associated beam parameters and predict their behavior through optical systems using the ABCD matrix formalism under the paraxial regime.
• will be able to analyze the performance and stability of different kinds of passive optical resonators using the ABCD matrix formalism under the paraxial regime.
• will be able to identify and distinguish the different kinds of third-order (Seidel) monochromatic aberrations and chromatic aberrations and point out their origin and occurrences in optical systems.
