The course teaches a student to understand the effects of materials selection on the design of highly stressed, movable vehicles and devices, such as satellite and aircraft parts. The student understands iterative design process and effects of the accuracy of models in design. The student can name tools and calculation methods used in applying composite and hybrid materials. The student can apply selected tools and sizing calculations to a specific design specification. The student understands the effects of limitations and targets given by the design specification on the materials selection. The student can describe selected examples of advantages that a minimum mass brings.
The course focus is in team-working - student teams develop and design a multidisciplinary, anisotropic structure example by calculations. The overall process by the teams targets to satisfy requirements given by a design specification along with a minimum mass of the product. The detailed calculations of materials and structural entity require studying versatile source data and often the different backgrounds of students are an advantage for different roles in the teams. Different teaching techniques are used to support the work and calculations by the teams. In addition, lectures provide information about iterative design processes and materials selection in real world products.
