The Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies educates professionals in the analysis of literature, society and culture who are able to carry out independent scientific research. Upon completion of the degree, you will be familiar with the field of literary studies and able to understand, follow, and promote literary research and to develop scientific knowledge. You will also be familiar with the requirements of being a professional researcher and working as an active member of the international scientific community. You will have an extensive education, critical thinking skills and a multidisciplinary international network of researchers who know how to bring theory into practice and vice versa.

The Programme is among the top programmes in the world particularly in the field of narrative research and, as the world of media, business, and politics is increasingly battling over stories, the literary studies experts from Tampere are in great demand. In our research and education, we highlight how theoretical and analytical understanding of the history and special features of literary formats provide tools for cultural and social change. Writing the thesis and learning the related research skills are at the core of the Programme. As our graduate, you will be able to work in the scientific community and society together with various co-operation partners.
