The course can be started in September or February by participating in mandatory background lectures. In this context, it is checked that the students have sufficient background knowledge and skills to take the course.
Communication Systems Laboratory Course, 5 cr
Show
The actual laboratory work is expected to take 30 % of the effort. Acquiring the background knowledge, as well as examination and evaluation of the measurement results belong to the student's self studies.
Core content
- After a basic RF-measurement task student will be able to use basic measurement equipment of telecommunication. Student will be also able to use general measurement units for noise and signal power and make related conversions. Student is also able to distinquish the time and frequency domains.
- After the IQ- modulation task the student will be able to describe operation of each blocks in IQ-receiver.
- After the network-analyzer task student will be able to study responses of some unknown devices.
- WCDMA-1. After this work, student should be able to know basics of planning UMTS indoor radio network, and WCDMA signal propagation in indoor environment.
- WCDMA-2. After this work, student should be able to understand the
difference between IDLE and CONNECTED mode. - After the modulation task student will be able to plan and implement basic measurement arrangements of analog modulation system.
- After the receiver task student will be able to design measurements involving sensitivity, bandwidth, and SINAD characteristics.
- After the Digital modulation task student will be able to name, classify and separate most general digital modulation methods.
- After the Wimax task student will be able to explain basic principles of Wimax system, and measure them.
- WCDMA-SHO. After this work, student should be able to explain basics of signaling, parameters and dynamics of WCDMA-SHO.
- After the monitor-receiver task student will be able to measure basic performace parameters from real commercial receiver
Prerequisites
Good skills in performing electronic measurements are a mandatory background for taking the course. The theoretical background knowledge depends on the chosen exercises.
To support this course, it is strongly recommended to choose also the lecture course Basic RF Measurements COMM.RF.410, in which the theoretical background of the work course measurements is lectured.

Apply for Open University studies by using the following links:
You can find a link to the Open University Admissions service and application instructions on the Applying to Open University studies page.
Some of the studies require prior studies. For example, studying intermediate studies may require some completed basic studies. These are described on the Information about studies tab of the study unit under prior requirements.
When you have been admitted to the studies, you must enrol separately via the Sisu information system for the implementation of the unit of study and, for example if set, for a practise group of your choice. You will receive instructions on how to do this by e-mail after you have confirmed your acceptance of the study place by paying the required fee.
