Prerequisites: completed a Bachelor’s degree at a university or university of applied sciences

In order to complete the studies you must have a good command of English.

You must submit the degree certificate in electronic format as attachment to your application (file format PDF, PNG, JPG) .

The course has a limited number of places. The places are filled in order of enrollment (on a first come first served basis). There is a quota of 3 for the Open University students.

When you have been admitted to the studies, you must enrol separately via the Sisu information system for the implementation of the unit of study and, for example if set, for a practise group of your choice. You will receive instructions on how to do this by e-mail after you have confirmed your acceptance of the study place by paying the required fee.

Introduction to the scope of epidemiology and its basic concepts and methods: measures of occurrence and associations, defining exposures and outcomes, validity of measurements, systematic error, random error, confounding, descriptive and analytic epidemiologic study designs, causality.

After completing this course, the student will   - understand the basic concepts, principles and methods of epidemiologic research, - be able to assess population health and associated factors by calculating and interpreting various measures of occurrence and associations,   - recognize and be able to describe the main epidemiologic study designs (cross-sectional, cohort, case-control and clinical trial approaches),   - understand the principles of critical evaluation of epidemiologic studies, including assessing the possibility of bias, confounding and other limitations in a study
