* student is able to explain features of common antenna types and reason their differences.
* student is able to explain principles of radiation from common antenna types.
* student is able to design wideband/multiband antennas.
* student can apply numerical simulation tools to common antenna design problems and has experience is interpreting their results.
* student has experience in constructing antenna type(s) and in use of measurement results in evaluating properties of the constructed antenna(s).
* student is able to find information from relevant literature and create a scientific report describing his/her work.
Core content
- Broadband antennas. Broadbanding of microstrip antennas.
Log-periodic and spiral antennas.
Numerical simulations of broadband antennas. - Quality factor, fundamental limitations on size, efficiency, and bandwidth of antennas. Examples of other resonant antennas.
- Travelling wave antennas, surface waves.
- Aperture antennas. Radiation from a slot, analysis of horn antennas.
- Antenna arrays. Array factor, beam steering, mutual coupling in arrays.
Numerical simulations of antenna arrays. - Numerical design methods and tools. Construction of antennas (e.g. wideband or multiband antennas).
Basic antenna measurements. Reporting and interpreting measurement and simulation results. - Bodyworn antennas, on-chip antennas, effect of nearby objects on antenna performance.
New antenna materials (e.g. textiles)
