Tampere University Student's Handbook

Exchange student’s student union membership and student card

Exchange students are entitled to join the Student Union of Tampere University (TREY) and get a student card. Your student card entitles you to various services and benefits, such as discounts at student restaurants and on train and long-distance bus tickets. The membership is voluntary for exchange students, but highly recommended. It is also the only way to get an official Finnish (plastic) student card, no other versions (for instance, a mobile app version) are available for exchange students at the moment.

Discounted meals at campus restaurants do not require a student card or a membership, also a meal subsidy card issued by Kela is valid. You can get your meal subsidy card from the Student Affairs Office. The card is valid in all student restaurants in Finland.

Please note that if you are a visitor or an intern who does not have officially have the status of an exchange student at Tampere University, you are not unfortunately able to join TREY and get a student card.
