TAMK Student's Handbook

Instructions for students on the use of the EXAM system

Nb Separate TAMK and university-specific detailed instructions can be found below.

Instructions for students

As electronic examinations differ from traditional paper-based examinations in terms of their physical settings and supervision arrangements, students are expected to observe an even stricter code of conduct while taking electronic examinations than paper-based examinations. These guidelines specify the code of conduct and practical instructions for taking electronic examinations at Tampere Universities. Separate guides for students and teachers offer more detailed instructions for using the electronic EXAM system. Please be aware that students must observe absolute silence in the electronic examination rooms at all times, as the examinations of other students may already be in progress.

Electronic examinations are completed on Windows computers equipped with a limited set of software and restricted access to the internet.

Questions about the electronic EXAM system: it-helpdesk [at]

1. ARRANGING AN ELECTRONIC EXAMINATION Teachers may arrange course-related skills demonstrations (such as examinations, mid-course examinations or weekly assignments) that students are required to complete electronically. The teacher sets the number of attempts allowed at the examination, determines the period when the examination remains available in the electronic system, and decides how long students may take to complete the examination. Teachers are responsible for creating electronic examinations in the EXAM system.

2. HOW TO ENROL ON ELECTRONIC EXAMINATIONS Students book a time slot for an electronic exam through the EXAM system. The system shows you all the available time slots depending on the opening hours of the exam room, the exam period determined by the teacher, your other bookings and any special restrictions that are specified by you or the teacher (such as enrolment periods, the availability of special software, or accessibility).

You must ensure that you are entitled to complete the exam as determined in the curriculum. Teachers are not obligated to mark the answers of students who are not entitled to complete the exam. You can book a time slot for your exam after the teacher has published the exam in the EXAM system. You must book your time slot well in advance, so that you will be able to complete the exam before the deadline set by the teacher expires. You may book only one time slot for each exam at a time. If you book a time slot but neglect to attend, this will be counted as an attempt. You may reschedule or cancel your enrolment before your booked time slot begins.

2.1. Step-by-step instructions for enrolment

1. Start Firefox or Chrome (do not use Internet Explorer).

  • You should preferably use your own computer to enrol on an electronic exam. If you use a publicly accessible computer, please be sure to clear the cache before and after using the EXAM system.

2. Log in to the EXAM system at or (depending on whether the exam is stored in the EXAM system of Tampere University or Tampere University of Applied Sciences).

  • Log in your University-issued username and password.

3. Once you are logged in, use the search functions to find the correct exam, or paste the enrolment link that you have received by email from the teacher to the address bar. Please note that if a personal examination (such as a maturity test) has been created for you in the EXAM system, you will receive a notification by email.

  • Enrol on the selected exam. Please note that you must also book a time slot for the exam.
  • Make sure that you enrol on the correct exam.

4. Book a time slot for the exam in your preferred exam room.

  • You can book any of the available time slots.
  • Make a note of the room number and the randomly selected computer number (such as PC 5).
  • You will receive a confirmation by email and will be able to add the event to your calendar.
  • Before the exam, please make sure that you are authorised to access the building and exam room. Please contact the nearest info desk well in advance to inquire about access rights, if necessary.

5. Changing and/or deleting your booking.

  • You can change or delete your booking through the EXAM system before your time slot begins. If you are unable to attend the exam, please cancel your booking early on to make the time slot available to others.
  • Unless otherwise stated, you will be able to book a new time slot for the exam after the teacher has marked your answers.

Students complete electronic examinations under supervised conditions. You must ensure in advance that you will be able to access the facilities at the designated hour. If your exam ends after the doors to the building have been closed for the day, you must vacate the building immediately after completing your exam. People are only allowed inside the exam room to complete an exam and must use their personal key card to enter the facilities. If you have no valid personal key card available, you must agree on the access arrangements in advance or obtain a single-use key card by contacting the info desk attendants.

You may start your exam at any time within your booked time slot. The time available for your exam starts to run when the allotted time begins. The system displays the remaining time. At regular intervals, the system will automatically save the answers that you type or upload as appendices. The exam ends after you call it off, submit your answers or when the system automatically submits your answers at the end of your time slot.

Any files that you prepare outside the system will not be marked unless they are appended to your answers. After your exam has ended, you will no longer be able to return to your answers. No user support is available during electronic exams.

3.1. Code of Conduct in exam rooms

You must observe this Code of Conduct from the moment you enter the exam room. 5. Please refrain from wearing perfume and other fragrances in the exam room.

Students take electronic exams under supervised conditions, which include real-time and recording audio and video surveillance, access control and random check-ups. These records may be combined to verify the identity of a person taking an exam and to investigate any suspicions of misconduct.

Any disturbances and suspicions of misconduct may be monitored in real time. Videos recorded in the exam rooms are viewed on a regular basis and whenever there is reason to suspect misconduct. If necessary, access records may be crosschecked with the bookings stored in the examination system and the video recordings.

Students must present valid ID upon request during and after an electronic exam.

If you are unable to present valid ID, the staff will take a photo of you and ask you to provide a signature. Your answers will not be marked until your identity has been confirmed.

A student who engages in academic misconduct during an exam will fail the exam.

Students who leave the exam room in the middle of an exam will fail the exam.

Students who disturb others in the exam room may be removed from the premises. Students who do not comply with the requirements provided herein but are not suspected of academic misconduct will receive an electronic reprimand.

If your exam session is interrupted or prevented due to a technical failure, disturbances in the exam room, a fire alarm or other similar reasons, you will be required to submit a notification. You may request a new attempt at the interrupted exam or submit the answers that you saved before the interruption, in which case the teacher will be informed of the incident and may take the interruption into account while marking your answers. You will be granted a new attempt at the exam if the notification is found justified.

Teachers are expected to mark students’ exams and assignments and store the results in the academic records no later than 21 days after students have submitted or should have submitted the exam or assignment.

The completion date of an electronic exam or assignment, which appears in your academic records, will be the day when you complete the exam or assignment in the exam room.
