About me

I am a professor of anatomy at Tampere University, Finland. Currently I work as the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. 

I graduated from the University of Oulu in 1991 (MD) and obtained my PhD degree in 1994. From 1996-1998, I worked as a visiting researcher at Saint Louis University. In 2001, I obtained a specialist physician degree in Clinical Chemistry. In 2002, I was invited to the post of professor of medical technology and biotechnology at the University of Tampere, and in 2008, I was appointed to the post of professor in anatomy. From 2016-2018, I served as vice-rector (research) at the University of Tampere. 

Fields of expertise

My research is mainly focused on physiological role of carbonic anhydrases and pH regulation in different organisms. 

Main positions of trust

I have served in the following positions of trust: scientific advisor of several EU-funded projects, chairman of the Research Council (University of Tampere), chairman of the Preparatory Group for Tampere3 research, and board member of FinnMedi, Ltd. 

At the moment, the main positions of trust include: editorial board member of Journal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, chairman of the advisory board of Finnish Medical Foundation, board member of Pirkanmaa Hospital District, board member of Tampere University Foundation, board member of UKK Institute, and chairman of FinELib strategic board.
