Sustainable polymer film solutions

Tampere University of Applied Sciences
1.3.2018–28.2.2021

The project objective is to develop materials, processes and biodegradability/compostability testing for sustainable plastic film products.

Goal

More sustainable material and process solutions for film, packaging and hygiene paper product sectors are being developed in the project by using regional collaboration, expertise and research environments.
In the development of compostable or biodegradable material solutions, the applicability of both commercially available plastics as well as novel bio-based or recycled plastics in mono and multilayer structures are studied and demonstrated. The energy efficiency of the production process and a testing environment for biodegradability and compostability will be developed. The novel centre of expertise created in the project provides companies with a unique R&D platform to strengthen their growth and competiveness in the Tampere region and create new business opportunities through sustainable polymer film and coating solutions, especially in disposables.
The development project is funded by the Council of Tampere Region. The project partners are VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (coordinator), TAMK and Ekokumppanit Oy. The development project is closely connected to the investment project PIHI - Sustainable Polymer Film Solutions – Investment.
