Supramolecular chemistry of bio- and nanomaterials

As part of the larger Chemistry and Advanced Materials community, the team is interested in bio- and nanomaterials such as extracellular vesicles, liposomes, polymer nanoparticles or cellulose nanofibers, use of new tools such as fluorescence lifetime microscopy to track to analyze drug molecules and carriers, and tailored materials for pharmaceutical applications.

Research focus and goals

We use light to study biological processes, phase behavior in solids and solution and to activate drug release processes. We are developing methods to track and analyze the interactions of drug nanocarriers and living cells in situ. The main tool is Fluorescence Lifetime Microscope, but we are also actively collaborating with many laboratories and universities.

We are also studying new ways to control drug release rate. These include iontophoresis, drug nanoparticles, liposomes, polymeric carriers, and other supramolecular systems. A particular area of interest is light-triggered release from liposomal drug carriers.

We are furhter evaluating the potential of Nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC) for controlled drug delivery, which has attracted a lot of attention as a natural alternative bio-based material.
