Open science

Open science and research are tightly interwoven in the activities of Tampere higher education community. Scientific publications and theses, research data and methods produced within Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences are primarily open and meant for cooperative use.

We appreciate openness of science and support its fulfilment. The main ambitions and characteristics of open science are:

  • publication of research results, research data, source code and methods in such a way that they can be accessed and used
  • transparency, findability and reusability of research methods, research data and results
  • benefits to society, to science and to the researcher

Openness promotes science and the development of scientific community:

  • enhancing and ensuring the quality of scientific knowledge
  • strengthening the reliability and transparency of research
  • increasing the possibilities to utilise scientific knowledge and scientific methods in research, teaching and studying
  • enabling and enriching mutual collaboration between researchers
  • increasing the impact of research in society

The openness of science is an integral part of good scientific practice and researcher skills. Our Open Science guideline defines the general principles of openness and the specific principles of open publishing and data. We also disclose how we monitor and assess the progress and impact of open science.

In order to implement the open science policy, we have prepared separate action plans for Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The action plan for Tampere University of Applied Sciences will be published later in the spring.

Tampere University action plan on open science

Tampere University is an active actor in promoting open science both nationally and internationally. We have an ambitious action plan on open science, based on the guideline approved in June 2018.

The action plan reflects the structure of the guideline and consists of four chapters: General Principles, Openness of Research Data, Open Publication and Monitoring and Assessment.

In General Principles, we set open science an integral part of our processes and the daily work of our researchers. We develop actively and consistently our own culture of open science and the practices related to it. In all areas we attach importance to the share of information, training and advice. A permanent coordination group monitors and supports the implementation of the University’s open science policy.

In Openness of Research Data, we put a lot of emphasis on versatile data management issues. We create a multi-professional data service, including high-quality data support and the information systems required for good data management.

In Open Publication, we actively foster the development of sustainable open publication solutions. Gathering up-to-date information on funders’ requirements and the openness criteria and models used by various publication channels, we can offer apt support and advice that ensure the openness of publications. We also develop systematically our own publication series.

In Monitoring and Assessment, we methodically reflect upon the preconditions and realisation of open science. We will draft an evaluation and monitoring plan that defines the goals, topics, indicators, methods, processes and responsibilities of the follow-up. Tampere University supports the principles of the DORA declaration, which emphasise the responsible assessment of research.

Tampere University of Applied Sciences action plan on open science

Tampere University of Applied Sciences action plan on open science will be published later this spring.
