PoraKONE – Responding to Local Structural Change in Economy by Augmenting Engineering Education

Tampere University of Applied Sciences
1.1.2018–30.6.2020

The aim is to develop a new model to respond to engineers' rapidly changing skills needs.

Goal

Rapid changes in the need for labour in business and ageing of the workforce's knowledge are acknowledged
problems in contemporary labour market. In the PoraKONE project, a new kind of response will be developed to engineers' rapidly changing skills needs. A novel model of cooperation will be developed in cooperation with the universities of applied sciences of the six largest cities in Finland. The model can be extended to the whole of Finland. The project also involves a new kind of model for digital interaction with enterprises. The model will be tested in a pilot training in supply networks of machinery, energy and marine technology industries. These industries were selected to the pilot testing because their need for skilled labour will be high in the near future. The key companies include significant enterprises whose size varies from start-up phase to large companies.

The employment effects of the PoraKONE project are significant. It is estimated that 250 engineering students will participate in the project's pilot trainings. The duration of unemployment can be minimised with rapid and precise training of engineers for growth industries. The studies can be started and completed flexibly from the student's point of view.
