PlaCeEra - Plastic deformation mechanisms in ceramic materials

The main objective of the research is to transform the paradigm of fragile ceramics to adapt the idea of ductile behaviour in ceramic nanostructures. Plasticity enables totally new design principles in nanostructures, such as functional coatings and surfaces. When we find a way to control the mechanism of plastic deformation in ceramics, we have tool for upscaling the structures from 2D to 3D constructions. That gives a totally new tool for material and nanostructure design. Project utilizes both the bottom-to-top approach and top-to-bottom strategy. We seek fundamental understanding of ceramic plasticity starting from the molecular modelling and in-situ testing in electron microscope. Top to bottom approach proceeds via mesoscale modelling, testing and advanced manufacturing towards the nanoscale.
