Metal and Lightweight Structures

The research group works on development and analysis of design methods, advanced systems and innovative concepts in high performance steel, timber and hybrid structures. The research focuses on structural analysis, design and optimization at the ambient and elevated temperatures. Our expertise also covers structural mechanics and experimental and numerical studies in the area of building acoustics, vibrations and structural fire resistance.

Research focus and goals

Our goal is to develop and advance the use of more efficient design methods and more sustainable structural solutions in close co-operation with other research groups and industry. We have a strong teaching focus and it is important for us to quickly implement new research results into education. The group is actively involved in European standardization and development of steel structures and fire safety in buildings.

Key research areas include:

  • High strength steels
  • Optimization and automation of structural design
  • Stability and vibration of steel and timber structures
  • Steel joint analysis and design at ambient and elevated temperatures
  • Fire safety design in buildings
  • Response of structures to fire
  • Accredited fire testing

The research group also conducts accredited fire testing:
