LILIAM (Lifelong Learning for Additive Manufacturing)

LILIAM or Lifelong Learning for Additive Manufacturing, is a two-year project funded by EIT Raw Materials. LILIAM aim to set up a training program in AM dedicated to operators, specialists, engineers, managers and new professionals to fill the actual lack of specialists able to take advantage of AM over the whole value chain (from raw materials to end of life). LILIAM will deliver the first European certificate on AM training. An international network of 8 European partners, which include Politecnico di Milano (Italy) Tampere University (Finland), Sirris (Belgium), CEA (France), Aitiip (Spain), Fotec (Austria), Fraunhofer IWS (Germany), and Trentino Sviluppo (Italy) will develop the training modules.

The first year of the project will define the requirements of the training program and design training module content with the support of an industrial board of representatives from Industries within Europe. The second year of the project implements a pilot training program to train industry professionals using the developed modules and training approaches. The pilot program will obtain critical feedback from the participants involved to calibrate the scope of the program to match industrial needs.

Tampere University (TAU) will serve as the lead partner for developing training modules on AM product/process modeling and simulation during the first year. Subsequently, TAU will serve as one of the three pilot program centers during the second year of the project.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has grown exponentially in recent years and is one of the main pillars in the European manufacturing sectors transition to Industry 4.0. 

To maintain the leadership in the industrial sector, it is necessary to develop standardized education and training programs to fill the knowledge/skill gap of manufacturing professionals to understand, integrate, and use AM in current manufacturing practices. Such programs would enable skilled workforce in the sector and provide benchmarks for AM utilization in European manufacturing industries.
