FinnLight, Finnish National Infrastructure for Light-Based Technologies, is a Tampere University coordinated consortium of photonics research infrastructures consisting of Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland, and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. The development of photonics technologies requires advanced design and fabrication methods, testing and integration capabilities, as well as extensive characterization techniques. FinnLight is a coordinated platform that offers a wide range of services for the fabrication, characterization, and integration of photonics and light-based technologies. FinnLight is part of Finland’s national infrastructure roadmap (FIRI) established by the Academy of Finland.

Researchers, commercial users, and companies can benefit from FinnLight’s research and technology expertise through collaboration projects or contract research. FinnLight offers dedicated and qualified personnel, open access to instruments, tailored researcher training, scientific consultation, or equipment rental.

FinnLight research infrastructure operates at the interface between photonics, optics, physics, chemistry, material science, surface science, micro- and nanofabrication, and quantum technology.

The infrastructure enables the development of new materials, coatings, thin films, advanced light sources, optical and integrated components for sensors and LIDAR applications, quantum technologies, photovoltaic technologies, light harvesting devices, AR/VR devices, and communication components.

Applications areas include sensing and imaging, industrial process control, pharmaceutical analysis, health care, environmental monitoring, energy production, safety, and security.

The infrastructure benefits the collaboration networks of FinnLight partners as well as numerous national and EU users in different fields. FinnLight services are accessible to external users, contributing not only to high-impact and cutting-edge science but also extensively serving industrial actors.

FinnLight partners have a strong expertise and long experience in photonics research. Their expertise covers the full value chain of light-based technologies development including design and fabrication of nanomaterials, thin films, optical components, light sources with tailored characteristics, system integration and characterization, advanced measurement techniques and instrumentation.
