Expressions and negotiations of solidarity and control in the time of COVID-19

Tampere University

COVID-19 pandemic is inducing extreme expressions of solidarity and friendliness, on one hand, and, on the other hand, expressions of guilt and control among individuals and communities. This study analyses how solidarity and control are expressed, practiced and morally negotiated at different levels of society during the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe that the othering discourses and the polarization of groups and communities, visualized by the COVID-19, advances our knowledge on communal and societal structures of power and inequality – and on how those are maintained and (re)constructed in immediate relationships, local communities and at national and international level.
