Building Institutional Capacity in Leadership and Management of Ethiopian Universities (LMEU)

Tampere University

Building Institutional Capacity in Leadership and Management of Ethiopian Universities (LMEU) Project sets to play an instrumental role in modernizing the HE leadership and management capacities of Ethiopian partner universities. The LMEU Project identifies three major partner universities in Ethiopia. These are Addis Ababa University (AAU), Bahir Dar University (BDU) and Mekelle University (MU). Moreover, as the LMEU Project is a continuation of LMUU & LMUU II Projects, it closely works with Ugandan and South African partner universities in the selected result areas. In essence, it will support and benefit from the PhD programmes and professional training opened in Ugandan Management Institute (UMI), Makerere University (MUK), and University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

Background

This project belongs to Higher Education Group in the administrative sciences,Faculty of Management. There are six partner universities in this project. These are: 1. University of Tampere--Coordinating University 2. Addis Ababa University--partner 3. Bahir Dar University-partner 4. Mekelle University-partners 5. Uganda Management Institute-associate partner  6. Makerere University-associate partner 7. University of KwaZulu-Natal-associate partner

Goal

The LMEU Project started its operation based on the assumptions that there is weak institutional leadership and management severely limits the responsive capacities of Sub-Saharan African HEIs to socio-economic needs of their societies. The rapidly expanding and transforming higher education sector in Africa needs leaders and managers who are knowledgeable, skillful, and competent. There is an acute need for sustainable capacity building programmes for improved leadership and management in HEIs. Collaborations with national and international HEIs provides a useful platform for sharing experiences and building capacity in leadership.

Therefore, the Project aims to:

  1. Strengthen the academic knowledge base of HE Management and Leadership  by opening joint PhD programme
  2. Disseminate expertise in HE Leadership and Management to the HEIs and departments by strengthening professional training in HE leadership and management
  3. Support the development of African Network of Centres for HE Research and Development (ANCHERD) in Ethiopia, South-Africa and Uganda to strengthen the research and development capacity in field of the leadership and management of HEIs
