Tampere University wants to encourage its community members to promote Open Science by annually rewarding a group or individual who has excelled in this area. The 2022 Open Science Promoter of the Year Award goes to Doctoral Researcher Annina Lattu.

Annina Lattu, Doctoral Researcher at Tampere University, was selected as the recipient of the Open Science Promoter Award. Her research focuses on current and challenging issues in Open Science, and Lattu has also promoted good Open Science practices and policies at the national level through her research and active expert work.

In her dissertation, Lattu studies Open Science practices in university-industry collaboration in Finland and China. More particularly, she focuses on research collaboration between universities and industry, and the enablers and obstacles to Open Science practices. Lattu uses institutional logics theory and institutional change agency to illustrate how the Open Science movement has changed the norms of research collaboration between universities and industry.

Lattu’s preliminary findings have been applied by the national level Open Science collaboration working group, which published the Recommendation and a checklist for Open Science in collaborative research, development and innovation activities between research organisations and companies in Finnish in April 2022. Lattu was also one of the authors of the national Recommendation on the open availability of research publications for research funders in 2021 (available in Finnish).

On Tampere University’s Open Science Promoter Award

Tampere University is strongly committed to the principles of Open Science. The openness of science ensures that the latest results of research and education are available – in an equal and ethically and materially sustainable manner – not only to all researchers and teachers but also to companies and citizens. Open Science covers research data, publications, software and code, methods, learning materials and environments, as 1well as Citizen Science. With the Open Science Promoter Award, the University wants to give recognition and visibility to a person, group, or project that has exemplarily promoted the openness of research and/or education at the Tampere University community.

Nominations for the recipient of the award were openly invited in April. The winner was chosen by Vice President Marja Sutela, Vice President Tapio Visakorpi and Library Director Riitta Lähdemäki. The award is worth €5,000 for a group or €2,000 for an individual candidate. The award is funded jointly by the University of Tampere Foundation and the Industrial Research Fund at Tampere University of Technology.

The prize will be awarded at the opening ceremony of the new academic year on 5 September 2022.
