Tampere University is listed among the top 400 in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact rankings. The rankings measure the University’s performance in delivering four of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Compared to last year, the University has considerably improved its position in the partnerships category. The international rankings provide valuable feedback on the progress made by Tampere Universities in promoting sustainable development.

The THE Impact rankings measure how universities worldwide are performing against the SDGs.

This year, the international rankings included approximately 1,400 universities and higher education institutions, close to 300 more than last year. This was the second time that Tampere University participated in the THE Impact ranking. The University retained its position among the top 400 universities around the world.

The THE Impact Ranking uses a range of indicators to measure how universities are performing against the SDGs in terms of research, teaching, campus development and societal impact.

For the purpose of the rankings, Tampere University selected specific SDGs where its performance was measured. Compared to 2021, the University improved its performance most in the partnerships category. Last year, the University was placed in the 401–600 bracket in this category but was now moved up to the 101–200 bracket.

The University received its highest score for global partnerships. Education provided on SDGs produced the maximum score and consequently the University’s highest sub-score.

The University received its second highest score for promoting sustainable industry, innovations and infrastructures.

”Sustainable development is at the heart of the University’s strategy – we have made it our mission to work together to build a sustainable world. International university rankings provide us with valuable information about our progress. We can be happy that the results of the THE Impact rankings demonstrate that our efforts to integrate sustainable development into the curriculum and build partnerships are paying off,” President Mari Walls says.

Tampere University’s sustainable development goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes 17 goals. The THE Impact rankings produce an overall ranking of universities based on their data for SDG 17 (revitalising global partnerships) and the data the universities provide on their selected SDGs.

The areas where Tampere University was assessed included industry, innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, and partnerships for the goals.

  • Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
