Biking is a great way to decrease one’s carbon footprint and stay fit. Tampere University is now offering a bicycle benefit as a new fringe benefit for staff. By supporting biking, we want to promote employees’ occupational well-being and encourage responsible and sustainable transport.

The bicycle is intended for the personal use of the employee for commuting and leisure activities.

The benefit concerns both regular and electrically assisted bikes. The employee is free to choose the bike he or she likes, which the employer gets under a leasing agreement. The employee bicycle is a benefit that is part of the salary, meaning that the amount of the bicycle benefit (€100 per month) is deducted from the employee's gross salary. The tax administration defines the bicycle benefit as a tax-free fringe benefit, which is tax-free up to €1,200 of taxable value per year.

“Introducing the bicycle benefit was suggested by staff and we took it on board this autumn. Starting to support biking as a fringe benefit is great as it improves occupational well-being in everyday life and promotes environmental sustainability,” says Director Emilia Katajajuuri

Another recent fringe benefit is the chance to use one hour of weekly working time on exercise either alone or in a guided group. Both the bicycle and exercise benefit have been favourably received by staff.
